Product Description

This special edition DVD of The 7 Lights (with strikethrough) by artist Paul Chan digitally documents all the artworks that make up the unique and remarkable series. An evocation on the idea of light, the politics of time, and the promise of disaster, The 7 Lights unfold through a series of interconnected installations, projections, drawings, texts, and collages to evoke a new image of art for the 21st century. Shown for the first time in a unique interactive format, this DVD will be of interest to lovers of contemporary art and moving images, dromological scholars, historians of theology and politics, apostles of phenomenology, people who believe light today is a form of mediated pollution, philistines young and old, anyone with a criminal record, and animals. This special edition DVD includes: · Special video documentation of all the installations · Documented animations from the 1/2 Lights · Sketches from the making of The 7 Lights · Slideshows of collages and drawings of The 7 Lights · Special audio essay On Light as Midnight and Noon by Paul Chan · An Easter egg (whatever that is)

Review

"The Hong Kong born artist's continuing Lights cycle promises to be one of the major art projects of this decade." --ArtForum

"[His] video animations and documentaries, drawings, photographs, and other media--has made Chan one of the more closely watched artist of his generation." --The New Yorker

"Mr. Chan turns the screen into a field of changing colors, so that we concentrate on the music of the words, the activism of the soul that poetry is, the power outlet that art can be. It's a simple device, and like any effective political action, right or wrong, brilliant because it works." --The New York Times

Paul Chan's work has been covered by everyone from the New York Times to The NewYorker over the past year alone. This DVD provides access to one of the most exciting artists working today -- it's an opportunity to see the remarkable exhibit he had at both the Serpentine in London and the New Museum in NYC in case you missed it. The 7 Lights is a singular, breathtaking series, don't miss it!

In Paul Chan's 7 Lights, the viewer sees the shadows of 21st Century ephemera float to the sky. I'm not able to articulate why it's meaningful to me, but the imagery is very powerful and affecting. If you missed Chan's gallery and museum exhibits, check out the DVD. It's cool stuff.
