1.0 out of 5 stars Using Paul Harvey for Profit
I think the taste of this book is poor. Sean shouldn't be writing about Paul Harvey to make a profit. I guess he didn't write this book anyway, he had another author write it and put his name on it. But still, I find it a little distastful. Paul Harvey was a great American and people shouldn't profit from that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Food For My Soul and My Heart, September 7, 2009
This review is from: Paul Harvey's America: The Life, Art, and Faith of a Man Who Transformed Radio and Inspired a Nation (Hardcover)
I purchased the book after hearing Stephen Mansfield on Mike Huckabee's show 9-5-09. With everything going on in our nation right now, I have been aware of needing something to feed my soul, to tell my head and heart that things will be OK.......maybe. This book is absolutely food for the soul, remembering what the 50's and 60's were like; reading not only Paul Harvey's journey, but being able to read the relationship of his words to our world. Mansfield and Holland did a really unique job of sharing what was, and allowing a reader to see the parallels to today's world. We are living in the scarest times of my 64 years and it is giving me consolation to read and be aware that I'm not the only person that is afraid of what our America could be turned into, if we don't stand up and be counted. I recommend this for all ages. History does repeat itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paul Harvey's America, June 30, 2009

This review is from: Paul Harvey's America: The Life, Art, and Faith of a Man Who Transformed Radio and Inspired a Nation (Hardcover)
I have great memories of growing up listening to Paul Harvey. I have always admired his values and love for our country. Going in, I expected to get insights into his interesting life, and I did. But what I didn't expect is to discover the Paul Harvey of the 1950s and 60s. He was a passionate, outspoken critic of creeping nanny-state socialism. As I read, I found myself wishing he were still with us to speak some sanity and common sense into our current political circumstances.

Loved the book. Can't recommend it highly enough.

"Paul Harvey's America" is a beautifully written account of this remarkable man's life. I found the book inspirational on many levels, and especially enjoyed the pace and the intelligent way in which the events and anecdotes from Mr. Harvey's journey were woven together. It was a very insightful and enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy Paul Harvey's America!, July 28, 2009
This review is from: Paul Harvey's America: The Life, Art, and Faith of a Man Who Transformed Radio and Inspired a Nation (Hardcover)
This book is a terrific, quick, and informative read about one of America's great icons. Mansfield and Holland demonstrate the depths of Paul Harvey's character and the source of his optimism through both his fascinating life story and his on-air commentary. They do this without glossing over some of the more controversial aspects of Paul Harvey's life; rather, they put those controversies in their appropriate perspective. This is a super book to take with you on your next plane trip; you'll finish it on the return leg.

"Paul Harvey...good day!" That's a signature phrase I'll remember forever. I recall hearing his voice as a child and I'm happy to say my children came to recognize it as well. This book goes beyond the typical bio piece and speaks to the common sense "radio listener" in us all. Moreover, we get to understand how Mr. Harvey's insights and gentlemanly observations apply to our situations today.

On the way to the airport, I purchased "Paul Harvey's America," and it became a perfect companion on my international flight. Settling into my seat, I eagerly cracked opened the pages; and these words drew me in: "... let's gather round the fire of this amazing life and warm ourselves in its good-humored glow." And that's just what happened: I became warmed and encouraged by the life of a great American. I have always admired Paul Harvey--his life exuded all the decent and good traits of his generation--but the message of his life came alive as I read... it transcended generational gaps and speaks today. He was a patriot and his brand of patriotism never goes out of style. In truth, America needs his example more than ever. Mansfield and Holland have written an enduring story about a remarkable man. When my flight was over, I felt like I had lost a friend but gained a deeper appreciation of an American hero that has been remembered with joy and honor.

This book presented Paul Harvey exactly as he was: the standard-bearer for excellence in political journalism. It's an inspiring read, challenging all Americans to consider their politics, their faith, and their civic responsibilities.

5.0 out of 5 stars An American Treasure, March 31, 2010
This review is from: Paul Harvey's America: The Life, Art, and Faith of a Man Who Transformed Radio and Inspired a Nation (Hardcover)
Paul Harvey was there my whole life (well, till now). While I never actively
listened to his programs, or even knew when he was on the air, I ALWAYS
enjoyed hearing him speak whenever I happened upon him on the radio. His
"rest of the story" is a touchstone for virtually all Americans older than (I'm
guessing) 30, and his delivery was unmistakable. To repeat ... an American
Treasure.

So when I ran across this book at the library, I couldn't resist.

I enjoyed learning about the man and his life. Can't say I wholly agree with
all his "beliefs" (a prime example: I can't agree with one of his quotes that
seems to be representative of his unbending support of ANY (?)
business/corporation ... "I am fiercely loyal to those willing to put their
money where my mouth is"). That said, he certainly seemed to be all about doing
the "right" thing, and not tearing people down (like so many talk show personalities
today).

Recommended reading!
