Book Description

October 20, 2005
An in-depth study of the life of one of Hollywood's great leading men: actor, superstar, philanthropist, model husband, world-class racing driver, and authentic silver-screen icon - the man behind blue eyes. Paul Newman's best-known films, including "The Hustler", "Cool Hand Luke", "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", and "The Sting", are cherished both by movie lovers and within the wider culture. Daniel O'Brien now explores the lineage of Newman's life. His father did not approve of his son's acting ambitions, but Newman forged on regardless, graduated from New York's fabled Actors Studio, and made his name. He was startlingly handsome, but also bravely venturesome in his acting choices. He made a stunningly successful marriage with Joanne Woodward, but lost a son in tragic circumstances, and embraced political activism and good causes in later life. In the mid- 1980s, he enjoyed a remarkable double-Oscar-winning success, consolidating his status as one of the last and greatest living links between Hollywood's golden age and its post-studio-system era.

This review is from: Paul Newman (Paperback)
Someone needs to write an updated biography for Paul Newman and do better justice to the life of this interesting and talented man.

A cheap, outdated paperback, few photos to speak of, and the used copy I received was only in "fair" condition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Plenty of information, terribly written, April 13, 2011
This review is from: Paul Newman (Paperback)
This book does have lots of information about Paul Newman's life. However, it basically reads like one, 350 page wikipedia article about him. It is very disjointed. If you want to learn a lot about Newman's life, you could certainly pick this up, but I'd recommend looking for a different biography.

Excellent, large picture book with great narrative about one of the greatest actors. I highly recommend this book. The pictures are large, color, black and white - beautiful.
