Maynor Remembers Robeson Very Well Indeed,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Paul Robeson Remembered (Audio CD)
What a pleasure to hear the repertoire of Paul Robeson sung with such skill and beauty! Mr. Maynor's voice is one of the few that could pay tribute to the incomparable Paul Robeson. There is a generous mix of tunes from Robeson's career: spirituals and folk songs both foreign and domestic. John Henry was a one of the highlights of the album for me. Mr. Maynor found an accompanist to play the harmonica reminiscent of a beautiful recording that Robeson did with Sonny Terry. Of course it is best to listen to Mr. Robeson directly. Unfortunately, the recordings from much of his career were made with technology that could not capture the full range, clarity and purity of his voice. There are some marvelous Robeson recordings from the latter part of his career, but by then his voice had lost just a bit of the range of his youth. So it is good to have these tunes sung by a man of exquisite voice at the height of his power. Mr. Maynor demonstrates his respect and love of his mentor on every track. |
