I first learned of the heroic Pastor Paul Schneider when I read War and Grace: Short Biographies from the World Wars by Don Stephens. I knew then that I had to read more about this remarkable man, and I was delighted to learn that the definitive biography of Paul Schneider, written by Rudolf Wentorf, Schneider's contemporary, and translated by Daniel Bloesch, was available in English for the first time.

This is an important book. It is not only the moving and inspiring account of a courageous pastor who refused to compromise with the insidious demands of National Socialism, but it is a window into the national mindset of the German people, including most German Christians in that troubled era.

Paul Schneider was a Reformed Church pastor in the Rhineland when Adoph Hitler took power in 1933. Schneider had served courageously and was wounded in World War I. He considered himself a loyal German. But he saw very early the sinister nature of the new nationalism and he withstood Nazi intrusions into the church. His preaching quickly drew the attention of the Gestapo, and Schneider found himself isolated even from his own church consistory, who refused to support his opposition to the Nazi Party. Repeated arrests and interrogations led eventually to his confinement in the concentration camp at Buchenwald, where he died under the cruel torture of the notorious prison guard Martin Sommer.

The evil that Paul Schneider saw and preached against, was not at all obvious to most pastors in Germany at the time.

Every person in the world should know about the life of this great man of God. Paul Schneider's devotion to Christ is a testimony that we can all learn from. I considered him one of the greatest Christians of the 20th century. Please, please seriously consider reading this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone regardless of their religious beliefs or a person who considers themselves an agnostic or an atheist.

Most Christians who study the Holocaust have heard of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Martin Niemoller, etc. who were part of the "confessing church" that did not compromise their biblical faith in the midst of persecution and Hitler's pressure. This book about Paul Schneider, small church pastor, family man is a must read! He kept preaching the gospel despite being imprisoned, put in Buchenwald concentration camp, and trusting God to take care of his family while he suffered away from them for the Lord. This book was only recently translated from German, and a must read for those who want to be inspired to stay true to THE FAITH (based on the biblical gospel), no matter the circumstances.
