This is the best beginning tutorial on VB!,
By David G. (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Paul Sheriff Teaches Visual Basic 6 (Paperback)
Of the five books I've read on Visual Basic, including the two CDs that come with the Learning Edition of VB 5, Paul Sheriff's book is the best.He follows a logical progression of concepts, nearly every idea is accompanied by complete code, and his explanations are concise and coherent. The content is practical. It's easy to see how he is able to make a living training others how to use VB. I bought this book to strengthen my grasp of the basics, and I've learned a lot even while covering what is now familiar ground. I wish I had bought this book first. Sam's Teach Yourself VB 6 in 21 Days was a complete waste of time due to incomplete code references. Paul Sheriff's book is the exact opposite. It offers clear-cut code with a purpose. I will buy a second copy as a Christmas gift for my nephew. If Mr. Sheriff updates the book, I hope his publisher does a better job of proof reading, but that's a minor distraction.

Best beginner tutorial out and a great reference for all !,
By A Customer
This review is from: Paul Sheriff Teaches Visual Basic 6 (Paperback)
I started out in VB 5 with the Sam's Teach Yourself series and have been using Wrox books since VB 6. I picked this ridiculously under-priced book up to try (yet again) to better understand class modules, collections and ActiveX control creation. I found myself working thru the tutorials throughout because the examples are so well explained. I picked up alot and I've been developing professionally in VB and ASP for two years. I've since found that this book contains the same material as the first 10 videos in Keystone's Visual Basic 6 course (done by Paul Sheriff). As a first VB reader it is absolutely perfect.

Amongst the best of hand-holding/reference VB books,
By A Customer
This review is from: Paul Sheriff Teaches Visual Basic 6 (Paperback)
I am a programmer/consultant in another language and have purchased many programming books over the years. In the VB world (as other languages) I've encountered difficult to understand authorship in many of the books out there. Paul Sheriff's style is not only easy to understand, but the material gets to the heart of the matter in each topic with excellent examples. This book is for all levels of VB programmers as it can be used as a beginners book, yet as a good reference book for more advanced programmers. You don't need the index cards with this one. Hat's off to this one! It's about time! (No, I'm not one of Paul's friends :)

Very good book on VB. I had no prior experience and this book helped me on some major enhancements. I highly recommend this book. It lays out much of the VB language nicely and it's very easy to understand. Great price too!!

Excellent VB Book,

This review is from: Paul Sheriff Teaches Visual Basic 6 (Paperback)
I tried several other VB books before. All of them taught me some things, but all of them lost me somewhere in the middle. This one is different, because it teaches by explaining why and what for first. Even if it looses you in details, you can always keep going because the most important material is outlined for you first and stands out. I'm making a transition into Windows programming from procedural languages. For me the book teaches VB, as well as principles of Windows programming.

Excellent 1st VB book,
By Simon P Ralfe (Brighton, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Paul Sheriff Teaches Visual Basic 6 (Paperback)
I am so far only up to chapter 6 of the book but have been very impressed. I have spent in excess of GBP £100 ($150)on VB books, most of them only good for keeping doors open. Being a programmer of procedural and linear basic for many years, along with REXX and OPAL (Don't ask what this is) most of the books seem to assume an instant understanding of event driven, method oriented programming. I have found this a major cultural 'block' and it was not until I read this book that some of the most basic VB concepts made sense. Books that leapt into MDI examples within a couple of chapters (Without explaining such basic concepts as to how event procedures are named or the scope of VB variables), or seem to think you need large text-barren chapters on how to operate the IDE were not much help when it came to understanding VB language fundamentals. Excellent. Good value too.

Paul Sheriffs visual basic,
By Charles Brown (Tampa FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Paul Sheriff Teaches Visual Basic 6 (Paperback)
Like everybody else, I have purchased many Visual Basic books and have found that Paul Sheriffs books relate to the database manipulation(business world) better than most other authors. I like his style of coding and his heavy use of resuable code procedures and functions. Note: I purchased the book as a reference to his videos. The book says exactly the same thing as his videos(purchased these also). I did although have a tough time getting an adequate response from him with errors in his book. If he comes out with future books related to the web and or oops, I will probably be in line to buy a copy.

Worth Every Penny!,

Hats off to Paul Sheriff and Que for creating an affordable computer book. I have worked through the exercises in at least 6 books on Visual Basic 6.0 and I still have many gaps in my understanding of the basics. This book is helping me to fill in those gaps. I am learning alot from this book, and I recommend it for all Visual Basic beginners. This book has whet my appetite for Paul Sheriff on the Keystone Videos. If he expresses himself as clearly on those Videos as he does in this book, the videos will be worth their weight in gold.

Excellent Book!,

This review is from: Paul Sheriff Teaches Visual Basic 6 (Paperback)
This book fits exactly for someone like me - a recent graduate with two semesters in VB 5.0 who knows basic programming, yet still needs to learn a great deal more that is not written on a "dummies" level or that is way over my head. I have picked up a lot of little snippets that I did not previously know in the earlier chapters in addition to greatly expanding my VB knowledge in the later chapters. This book is extremely easy to read and explains everything very well. The price of this book is a good deal also, most computer books cost an arm and a leg and are nowhere near as good as this one.Very good job Mr. Sheriff.

The 3 Amigos,

This review is from: Paul Sheriff Teaches Visual Basic 6 (Paperback)
I've been wrestling with trying to review this book, along with two others I purchased as a package recently, and I came to the conclusion that I can't review this book alone, I have to review all three together. I'm reading them all simultaneously, and the similarities and differences, combined together, are making the study of Visual Basic 6.0 an extremely enjoyable experience. The other two are: (1) Visual Basic 6 Complete published by CYBEX (2) Step by Step Visual Basic 6.0 by Microsoft Press. Again, I can heartily recommend the combination of all three read at the same time. You will feel as if you are getting Visual Basic training at an accelerated pace, even tho, you will probably lose track of what book covered which topic. So far, at any rate, doing it this way is working out very well for me. Try it.
