Book Description

July 1, 2000

This book seeks to do for the study of Paul and Stoicism what E. P. Sanders did for Paul and Judaism. Instead of making a brick-by-brick analysis, Troels Engberg Pedersen provides the first comprehensive building-to-building comparison of how the two religious/philosophical systems functioned. The book moves through the major letters of Paul (e.g., Philippians, Galatians, and Romans), carefully documenting Paul's indebtedness to Stoic thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful For Even Amateur Scholars, October 19, 2011

This review is from: Paul and the Stoics (Paperback)
So I am no expert and I have not even read the whole book yet but I am very excited to read every bit that I do manage to get through. I think this person is really on some sort of high level, intellectually, from most writers that I read, but someone who I think knows what it means to work at getting his meaning across. Such as a lot of experience in an environment where there is a two way communication and not just teaching down to someone, or so I imagine would be the case, from things like me being able to even understand what he is saying. It prompted me to go ahead and also purchase his follow-up on this book, the one on Paul and Self and Cosmology. I find these subjects of the greatest importance and I appreciate the authors unbiased approach and I was happy to see where he gets Paul in aspects that I have come to realize through my own independent reading of Paul, but which seems to escape the comprehension of normal church goers.
