5.0 out of 5 stars lets hear it for the boy
I sat at my computer as my son watched Paulie, which I thought was going to be a silly.; stupid movie(ie amazon has it paired up with mouse hunt as a combo deal) . At first it did seem like a typical goofy talking animal thing...but at some oint I found myself glued to the piece...this is a movie that can be kind of dumb, but also dares to be smart, sensitive...

At first it did seem like a typical goofy talking animal thing...but at some oint I found myself glued to the piece...this is a movie that can be kind of dumb, but also dares to be smart, sensitive entertainment. There are great contributions throughout, funny lines, and a sentimental moment or two. The tone of the movie is much more reverant and lovely than I thought it would be.
Again, if it wasn't for my son, these movies would never exist is my psyche....this is a nice little movie...let's hear it for nice.

I am an adult. No children. Not a fan of animated films (didn't much like "Babe"). That said, this film completely captivated me and even left me believing in the enduring power of love and the great importance of it in our topsy-turvy world.

Bought it on a fluke after reading a few reviews while surfing [...]. Didn't expect much. Got everything.

I highly recommend it, both for adults and children (what a perfect film for a family to watch together), and here's why.

Oh, where to start. I would start with the fact that the most perfect voice was chosen to be our talking, and very smart, albeit sad, Paulie. Actor Jay Morh (the voice) also plays a role in the film very well indeed. His voice as a human is completely different than that of Paulie's, which shows this actor's talented skill.

Now what else do we have. A script which is entirely unpredictable. There is nothing trite, no cliches, the screenwriting (by Laurie Craig) is at its best, original and highly creative.

The story, well, it flows along, happy at times and sometimes sad. Sometimes very, very happy, and sometimes very, very sad. But the outcome is one of the most beautiful and sensitive scenes I have ever seen in any film.

The acting: one of the country's most sterling actresses, Gena Rowlands, excels in her role as an eccentric, impulsive, loving and honest woman who befriends Paulie to the max. I believe the other great performance in the film was given by Tony Shalhoub, who has gone on to such great success since the making of this film. On watching "Paulie," one can easily see why. His performance is sensitive and touching, honest and just plain admirable.

Also, great commendations to the film's director, John Roberts, for finding the truth within himself to direct a story with such integrity.

And let's not forget the 14 conures, all who play Paulie with such poignant believability, or the dancing ensemble of conures who perform a musical routine (even in costume) as well as humans could do it.

Have a good time with this one, no matter how old you are. It's actually insprirational, although it hits the highest mark in all areas!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Truly Delightful Surprise, January 4, 2004

This wonderful little movie is a truly delightful surprise. Paulie's experiences with love, loss, and courage brought me to tears several times during the movie. Paulie's vulnerability will tug at the heart-strings of animal lovers. And, as in "Fly Away Home" and "Winged Migration," the scenes of Paulie in glorious flight are beautiful and moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars A DELIGHTFUL FAMILY FILM, October 14, 2005
This review is from: Paulie (DVD)
Lost in the shuffle with BABE, PAULIE is a marevelously entertaining, heart-tugging little film that I found thoroughly entertaining. Paulie (well voiced by Jay Mohr, who also plays Benny) is a talking parrot whose adventures are relayed to a Russian immigrant (the marvelous Tony Shalhoub). After being booted out of the house of his owner, the young Marie, Paulie is taken in by a widow (splendid Gena Rowlands) and has other misadventures including a brief stint as a singing parrot with Cheech Marin. Bruce Davison (Willard, Longtime Companion) is the scientist who goes back on his promise to help Paulie locate his Marie; Trini Alvarado has a brief but important role in the movie's climax. But it is the ingenious voice casting of Mohr and the strong presence of Rowlands, Marin and Shalhoub that makes PAULIE such a delightful film for the whole family!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is A Delightful Movie For Young And Old!!!, July 12, 2005
This review is from: Paulie [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Paulie is a talking parrot who is locked in the basement of a Scientific Laboratory. There he meets a Russian janitor who Paulie refers to as a "mop monkey". However a friendship soon develops between the two of them and Paulie tells his life story and how he got separated from his original owner Marie. The janitor is so impressed with Paulie's adventures that he decides to help Paulie track down Marie. This is a wonderful gem of a movie. As one critic said" Paulie has the walk of Charlie Chaplin, the vocabularly of Mister Ed, the eyes of Bette Davis and the street smarts of any kid from Brooklyn". I just LOVE hhis movie which is a refreshing change from the usual car chases , explosions and actresses who take off their clothes which is so prevalent in movies these days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent movie for kids and adults, November 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Paulie (VHS Tape)
When I go to the video store to pick out the evening's entertainment, I don't usually make many good movie decisions. By picking "Paulie," I finally got one right. I got this movie for our five-year-old daughter and I grudgingly decided to watch it with her. It was a fun, intelligent and heartwarming movie. I laughed out loud at parts, and my little girl cried at various parts -- both with sadness and joy. After watching it, she said it's now her favorite movie, passing "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and "The Wizard of Oz." Pretty tough competition!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Parrot's Life, January 13, 2007

Paulie is a delight for the entire family. Tony Shaloub, best known for his portrayal of Monk the obcessive-compulsive detective, is the perfect straight man to whom Paulie can tell his incredible life story.
From the mysterious beginning, through many twists and turns, to its storybook ending,Paulie is a movie we enjoy watching again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars This sassy bird will find a way into your heart!, October 24, 2002
This review is from: Paulie [VHS] (VHS Tape)
When I first set down to watch this movie I wasn't sure it would be up my alley, I don't usually like animal stories where you hear the animals talking because, well, it is so [unrealistic]. But you know, parrots really CAN talk, which helped this movie have a great realistic feel to it, even though Paulie turned out to be much more, well, expressive than the average parrot! He is a sassy yet charming bird with an attitude that will have you in side splitting laughter! His story starts out with him living in a dark dreary basement in a cage by himself, and he is discovered by a man who wants to know his story. Paulie won't talk at first, but eventually tells the story of his life, from when he lived happily with his child friend Marie, and how he was taken away from her and then proceeded to try and find her and ended up with different people and adventures. "Paulie" is entertaining throughout with a very nice ending. I bought this movie for my collection since is such a nice family movie.

This is a fun and funny movie that works on a number of levels. Both adults and kids can enjoy it. It has intereting, quirkey characters (both bird and human), good story telling, and good effects. Think of a non-animated "Finding Nemo" with birds. All my family loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this movie--4 hankies, December 2, 1998
This review is from: Paulie (VHS Tape)
No kid but I love my parrot so this was a natural choice. So far, I've watched it twice and 4 hankies each time. This movie covers the human heart: love, devotion, separation, sadness, friendship, trust. I caution people: love this movie but do not to run out and buy a bird without doing lot of research--this is a huge commitment, much more than it appears.
