Book Description

"Professor Pauling is one of the most prominent and inventive scientists in this country. I have the highest esteem for his character and for his reliability as a man and as a citizen." - Albert Einstein, 1952 In 1986 Linus Pauling donated both his and his wife, Ava Helen's papers to their alma mater, Oregon State University. At over 500,000 items, the Pauling Papers stand as among the largest personal archives in the world. Now, twenty years after its donation, the OSU Libraries Special Collections, is very proud to present the complete inventory of this remarkable collection. Richly illustrated listings of the Paulings' extensive correspondence, manuscripts, research notebooks and awards, as well as their scientific, peace and personal papers make The Pauling Catalogue an invaluable resource for scholars of twentieth century history.

* Six volumes and nearly 1,800 pages - the most detailed inventory of one of the world's greatest archival collections.
* Introductions to each volume by major authors, historians of science and members of the Pauling family.
* A beautifully illustrated forty-five page Timeline chronicling the details of Linus and Ava Helen Pauling's extraordinary lives.
* An extensive reproduction of Linus Pauling's 1917 diary, written by a college freshman soon to become one of history's greatest scientists.
* Nearly 1,200 illustrations - many in full color - amplified with captions telling the stories behind the images.
* All six volumes are held in an elegant slipcase illustrated with an image by celebrated photographer Phil Stern.
The Paulings left an indelible mark on the twentieth century. Dr. Linus Pauling (1901-1994), the century's pre-eminent chemist, attained scientific renown through his pioneering contributions to structural chemistry, molecular biology and nutrition. In tandem with Ava Helen Pauling (1903-1981), his wife of fifty-eight years, Linus Pauling was likewise among the Cold War era's greatest agitators for peace and civil liberties. He remains history's only recipient of two unshared Nobel prizes - the first for his landmark research on the nature of the chemical bond (1954) and the second for his tireless activism in opposition to above-ground nuclear testing (1962).

Editorial Reviews

Review

The editors remark, in volume 2, p. 155: "Linus Pauling was, in many respects, a historian's dream. Not only was he inclined to save the great bulk of the papers that he collected over time, but he also made it a life-long habit to record much of his inner-dialogue as well." The scope and character of this six-volume catalog is well captured by this statement. The Pauling papers are maintained in a special collection at the Oregon State University Libraries. Chris Petersen and Cliff Mead staff this Special Collections unit of the library. Volume 1 begins with a useful timeline for Linus (1901-94) and Ava Helen (1903-81) Pauling. The volumes contain correspondence, publications, and manuscripts and typescripts of articles, speeches, and books; research, peace activities, travel, biographical material, honors, awards, citations, diplomas and other recognitions, audio-visual materials, photographs and images, newspaper clippings, magazine and journal articles, and personal library materials. A special section contains Pauling's wartime work for the US government during 1940-47. The collection contains more than 500,000 items. The catalog is enlivened by more than 1000 illustrations, including a large number of photographs of the Paulings and others. An available biography is Linus Pauling: A Life in Science and Politics, by Ted Goertzel and Ben Goertzel with Mildred Goertzel and Victor Goertzel (CH, Mar'96, 33-3916). The catalog is ideal for historians of science, and is engaging for browsing by chemists, students, and general readers. Summing Up: Highly recommended. General readers; upper-division undergraduates through professionals. CHOICE, 45-0288, (September 2007). --A. Viste, emeritus, Augustana College

The Pauling Catalogue, printed in an edition of 1,000 copies on acid-free 86 pound Gold East Matte, with its richly illustrated listings of Linus and Ava Helen Pauling's extensive correspondence, manuscripts, research notebooks, and awards, as well as their scientific, peace, and personal papers is a fittingly ambitious tribute to the remarkable lives of this couple. It forms a perfect complement to the selected collection of Pauling's scientific papers [15]. It constitutes an invaluable resource for historians of science and chemistry, scholars of science policy, and advocates of the peace movement, along with practicing chemists and scientists interested in the history of their fields, especially during the 20th century. It belongs in every academic library. Furthermore, its incredibly modest price, considering the magnitude of its contents and the number of its illustrations, makes it a best buy for students as well. Pauling has been called one of the two greatest scientists of the 20th century (the other being Einstein) and the greatest chemist since Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier, the 18th-century founder of modern chemistry. His multifaceted life and activities, both scientific and personal, spanned almost the entire 20th century. In 1986 Pauling donated both his and his wife's papers to Oregon State University, their alma mater. At more than 500,000 items, these papers rank among the largest personal archives in the world. Two decades later, in what is a 20-year labor of love, the OSU Libraries Special Collections has published the complete inventory of this remarkable collection. It contains the most detailed inventory of one of the world's largest archival collections; introductions to each of its six volumes by major authors, historians of science, or members of the Pauling family; more than 1,200 illustrations, 120 in full color, with extensive captions relating the stories behind the images; a beautifully illustrated 45-page timeline chronicling the details of the lives of Linus and Ava Helen Pauling's lives; and an extensive reproduction of Linus Pauling's 1917 diary. Each volume has separate pagination and separate ISBNs. Angewandte Chemie International Edition, 46 (3): 8112-8113. --George B. Kauffman, emeritus, California State University, Fresno
