introduction to issues in apostolic exegesis,

Ellis wrote this book in 1957 when he was research professor of theology at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. This book is still referenced today, especially in regard to Jewish exegetical techniques and approaches to the OT. I have personally found the footnotes an excellent source of bibliographical information for works of a previous generation.
Ellis interacts with several theses regarding Paul's interactions. He looks at the relationships between 1) Paul and his bible, 2) Paul and Judaism, 3) Paul and the apostolic church, and 4) Pauline exegesis. He includes some appendices of OT citations in the back. Ellis generally takes a conservative position. For example he views Paul's relationship to Philo as merely mutual dependence upon a common tradition (pg. 82). On the other hand, he makes statements like "Paul might agree with the little boy's maxim that `girls are all right as long as they stay in their place', for the apostle had definite opinions on the place of women in the life of his Churches" (pg. 63). Statements such as that make one wonder where Ellis stands on the nature of Scripture. This book received a short, positive, two paragraph summary-review by Charles Ryrie in 1958 Bibliotheca Sacra (BibSac) vol.115, pg. 269. This is a review of the 1991, third printing by Baker (204 pgs).
