Perhaps the twentieth century's most prominent Christian theologian, Paul (Paulus) Tillich was one of Rollo May's religion professors, served as May's doctoral dissertation chair at Columbia University (which became the classic book The Meaning of Anxiety), and eventually became mentor and close confidant to May for many years. It was in response to May's work on anxiety that Tillich penned The Courage to Be. At Tillich's funeral, it was May who delivered his eulogy. May's affectionate remembrance of his friend is a touching, intimate portrait of a complicated, controversial, contradictory and very human individual (much like Carl Jung, Tillich, who introduced May to the concept of the "daimonic," creatively carried a long shadow) from whom May learned much about the true meaning of "spirituality."
