Editorial Reviews

Review

PBT is a very simple yet powerful form of therapy. It has the potential to change lives for the better and in doing so have a positive impact on the stresses in today's world. -- Lynn Crilly, Author & Counsellor The Shirrans have created a brilliantly simple and powerful technique for making life choices and effecting positive change. -- Dr Leila Edwards, Principal, Transformations Institute This approach makes sense to everyone, from teachers to psychologists to parents and students. It is wonderfully simple, but simply effective. -- Stelios N. Georgiou, Proffessor of Educational Psychology, University of Cyprus This book clearly describes a technique that can be employed to very good effect in a range of therapies. I recommend its use. -- Windy Dryden PhD, Professor of Psychotherapeutic Studies, Goldsmiths, University of London

The technique called PBT uses the modern technology of a remote control, enabling the mind to pause, fast forward to the consequences of indulging in a certain behavior, and see whether it's worth taking such actions. Then one rewinds, and fast forwards to the rewards of abstaining. As the authors point out, the concept of "stop, think, act" is not new. But what differs with PBT is the visualization and the kinesthetics of actually moving your fingers as though manipulating a remote.

This technique was first used with patients of the gastric band weight loss therapy. But its use has expanded to include drug or alcohol abuse, all sorts of addictions (including sex and internet), repeat crime, even tattoos! It has successfully been used to teach prisoners not to repeat their crimes.

The great thing about the book layout is that the technique is introduced early so that the reader can start implementing it immediately; the rest of the book just reinforces its usefulness. The chapters include potential use to cut government spending and use for young people, as well as prevention of rioting and bullying. I really like that there is an entire chapter devoted to the concept of karma, reaping what one sows. The idea of the consequences of one's actions is emphasized thoroughly.

Each chapter begins with a quote and the book is sprinkled with quotes throughout. The book also discusses sabotaging thoughts. The idea of the authors is that, "If you can stop them at the beginning of the first thought, you stand a chance of stopping the thought before it's carried through to an action."

This is a great book for behavior and thinking pattern change. The method should be taught to all children in school or by their parents at home.

I bought this clever and thought provoking book through Amazon. It is very well written and has proved worth every penny. Anything that can make you think about your actions before you jump feet first into things, has to be good! I used to do a lot of jumping and acting first before thinking about the consequences.....well.....actually without thinking about the consequences at all......until it was too late and I was having to deal with the 'fallout'! and nearly always to my detriment!

The book is easy to read and understand, and full of common sense with some 'light bulb' moments! for me.

The Pause Button Therapy suggests that you PAUSE....THINK....DECIDE....ACT. This strategy can be used to help with numerous situations in life. For me it has helped me to lose over Five and a half Stone in weight partly by stopping and considering if I really want to eat that bar of chocolate or drink that bottle of wine or say those spiteful words....OR....would I rather carry on with my weight reduction and get into that new smaller skirt! Or eat the chocolate, drink the wine, or spit venom at maybe a loved one who didn't deserve that reaction.....then regret doing so because if I did I would still be a 'fat slob' no nearer my goal size or weight or be left feeling mean, possibly in the wrong and regretful. Thinking about it, the chocolate really isn't THAT nice and is gone in a flash, and the headache from the wine isn't nice either and lasts longer!!!, and once vicious words have been said, you cannot take them back.......... so........no real contest in the clear light of day. By Pausing, Thinking, Deciding and then Acting.......

An excellent book, covering a very interesting topic, like someone says in the book, for the life of me I cannot think why no one has come up with this approach before. I heard about the book at a conference I attended recently, it had created a lot of interest from the professionals attending.
In just one step Pause Button Therapy, takes CBT from passive to tactile, from tired to exciting. The use of the Pause, Play and Fast Forward, Reverse symbols throughout the book certainly enhanced the reading experience. I suspected that I would enjoy this before it arrived, I was not disappointed.

I found the book to be an easy read. I feel it will help change the way I react to challenges and spur of the moment decisions. I found it most interesting and will utilize it in my life and with clients. It is well written, concise and, most importantly gave me a new tool for dealing with difficult situations. It has me thinking, really thinking about consequences. I highly recommend it.

No doubt, the concept introduced in this book is definitely brilliant, one of the best I've ever read about. In addition, the background information is interesting and neatly compiled.

However, there are two reasons why I give only two stars. One is a far--fetched digression on karma. Hello? That doesn't fit the purpose of the book. The second reason is that the whole concept including background information and practical instructions could be sufficiently explained on approximately 50 pages. Therefore, the entire second half of the book is filled with senseless ramblings and endlessly repeated rhetorical questions.

About half of the book is filled with completely pointless lengthy discussions about such earth shattering questions like, would Clinton have abstained form the Lewinsky bj had only he known about the Pause Button Therapy?

These considerations are obviously only means to fill the pages and justify the price of the book, an approach I call sad, unprofessional, and unnecessary. I will apply the method anyway and I would have paid the same price for only the real deal without the ramblings.
