1.0 out of 5 stars Wish I could say something nicer, but
this book has neither the hard science of "Could It Be Perimenopause" by Dr. Steven Goldstein, nor the real solution to the problem, which IS explored in "Estrogen the Natural Way" by Nina Shandler. After reading these two books, I felt I really wasted my money on "The Pause". I recommend the other two instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read, June 9, 1999

This review is from: The Pause: Positive Approaches to Menopause; Revised Edition (Paperback)
This book on the subject of Menopause is excellent. I personally was having quite a time dealing with the strange physical ailments. Seemed like something new popping up almost daily, for sure weekly. I would truck to the local library and try to find something that would comfort my fears, but usually to no avail. One day I spotted "The Pause" in the bookstore and decided to try it. After reading it, my worries practically vanished. Yes, I still had all the symptoms I'd had before, but I knew it was normal. I wasn't dying of a new disease daily. This book also gave me the hope that one day I will pass to the other side of Menopause and be a new and better woman. All the symptoms I'd ever heard of were discussed. Then too, many new ones surprised me. I had no idea that shoulder pain was a normal symptom. In all of my reading, I had never seen that. Many, many topics are covered, including all the new medicines that are available. I must say this book saved my sanity, and believe me that is a big part of Menopause -- maintaining ones sanity. I guarantee a person will feel better having this book on hand to refer to, and to remind yourself you will make it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful way to be led down the path of life!, February 3, 1999

This review is from: The Pause: Positive Approaches to Menopause; Revised Edition (Paperback)
When "things started changing", I got all the usual platitudes: You'll get over it; You're NUTS!; So what?; Do you think you're the only one with problems? I'd read other books on the subject of menopause, such as THE SILENT PASSAGE, but they just didn't seem right for ME. This one HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD! I'd even asked my G.P. "What does a hot flash feel like?" and all I got was a pat on the head, a chuckle and "Oh, you'll know when you have one." That was NOT the answer I was looking for, wanted or needed. Upon finding this book, I phoned my doctor and suggested he read it and why. I got quite a shock when I was told I was not the first of his patients to tell him about it. Personally, I feel this should be REQUIRED READING for any doctor who treats women as it would benefit both the patient and the physician! My copy is dog-eared and has many highlighted areas and I refer to it and recommend it often. Thank you Dr. Barbach for caring enough to write it!

4.0 out of 5 stars HANDY REFERENCE, December 14, 1999

This review is from: The Pause: Positive Approaches to Menopause; Revised Edition (Paperback)
HANDY LITTLE REFERENCE GUIDE; I REFER TO MY COPY FAIRLY OFTEN, BUT I WISH IT WERE MORE DETAILED. SOME TOPICS I'D LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT ARE MENTIONED EITHER SIMPLY ANECDOTALLY, OR JUST IN PASSING.

5.0 out of 5 stars the pause is the bible for all women facing peri/menopause., December 27, 1998
This review is from: The Pause: Positive Approaches to Menopause; Revised Edition (Paperback)
Lonnie Barbach, Ph.D. has written the bible for all women going through perimenopause and menopause. Her book has helped me in so many ways, so many times. When I learned that I was in perimenopause at the age of 36 I knew nothing about it. Even though I have a four year degree in nursing it was a mystery to me. the pause changed all that. It is a simple to read yet a thorough journal containing all the how, whys and what to dos associated with perimenopause and menopause. Even though I have owned the book for over 2 years I refer to it on a weekly basis. Ms. Barbach's direct style of writing and added experiences from her friends and patients makes this book very personal. I routinely recommend it for all the members of my perimenopause online support group HotFlash!. the pause is an extraordinary book- it is for all women for all time.
