A Personal Glimpse of Pavarotti.,
By DianeGhig (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pavarotti: The Best Is Yet To Come (DVD)
I agree with the other reviewer that the real voice of Pavarotti speaking in Italian should of been heard and English subtitles used instead of the interpreters voice. I love to hear him speak Italian. But if you just don't let that bother you too much, you will accept it. Maybe he was saying too much for subtitles to be used in an efficient manner. Often subtitles, don't translate correctly or they omit words. The rest of the DVD is very entertaining. It gave you a little glimpse into Pavarotti's personal life, not to deeply, but it did give you some history into his childhood and singing career. I enjoyed the personal photos of him with his family and friends (which I can really relate to since I am Italian) and with the rich and famous. The songs he sang in this DVD are all my favorites. His voice was in good form....his dedication and talent is so apparent...and then there is that magnificent smile at the end of his songs that lights up the sky - it transforms him. I seem to like him more personally now that I heard all the comments by him, his father, his vocal instructor, etc. I wish they also interviewed his first wife and children. I really did enjoy this DVD. I think if you are a Pavarotti fan, you will enjoy this DVD and I recommend it. You can pick this DVD up so cheaply on Amazon. Go for it. Ciao for now!

An intimate look,

I quite enjoyed this DVD. My one complaint is I wish they had let Pavarotti's real voice be heard and have English subtitles underneath, instead of the English voice overriding his, as it spoilt it. A very informative DVD. I would recommend it.

neither a good documentary nor a proper concert,
This review is from: Pavarotti: The Best Is Yet To Come (DVD)
This DVD purports to contain both a documtary of sorts along with a concert performance of Pavarotti, however fails to deliver on either. The first 15 tracks contain quasi-interviews of Mr. Pavarotti, at various locales, however are hampered by being dubbed into English over Pavarotti's comments in Italian.
Worse, both the documentary and concert sections of this DVD are horribly edited. This is particularly annoying in the concert selections, as the film jumps, in the middle of arias, from Pavarotti singing in concert to the sappiest panoramas of beach scenes and the like. One might as well just listen to a concert CD and avoid being distracted by the kitchy attempts at artistic editing.

I ranked this as a 4. It is enjoyable, and informative. Some sections I have seen in other DVD's. But it is in its entirety very enjoyable. You get to share some personal moments. He was a unique personality. A great love for life, love of music, joy of friends.....and a true love of his home town Modena. His second love being New York. I liked that....because he performed so many operas with the Met. I wish he were still with us, so that indeed "The Best was yet to come". What a loss......

I actually love this DVD. The editing is different than anything I've ever seen. The Big Guy's face is all over the screen and he looks terrific and sings like... well, like he always does, magnificently. I would have liked to have heard him speaking in his native tongue as well, but that's minor. He is splendid in this DVD. He discusses many topics, not just the life of a tenor. Nothing redundant or any of his standard one-liners. It's a deeper glimpse into the soul of the greatest tenor in history. He touches on several profound topics and it's really fascinating. I'm a huge Pav fan, and even I learned a lot. Buy it, it's so worth it.

Funny graphic editing made this a jumble of nothing. Not a proper concert, not a proper documentary. NOT recommended! |
