I think backgammon is an excellent game for younger kids because it helps them with counting and simple math. Also, it is great for older kids and adults, because there is a great deal of strategy and tough decision making involved.
For [item price], this set really can't be beat. It is a fold up, leatherette case with stitched points, a felt playing surface, rolling cups, and decent checkers. If you're a tournament player or whatever, this board is obviously not for you. But, if you want something just for fun, this is the perfect set. I can see maybe a couple problems with it. The slot for the dice was a bit tight when I got it, and the board on the inner side got stretched out a bit when I put all the dice there. It didn't break, though, so it's ok. Also, the space for the checkers is a bit too large, so when the checkers are "home" they fall down, but, again, it's no big deal.

I wanted a backgammon set to use with my children. Plus or minus $10 is exactly where I wanted to be but didn't hold out much hope. This set is really very nice - well set up and usuable. I didn't expect to get this nice a set for the money.

Great backgammon set for your Kindergartener/1st grader and up, April 28, 2006

I got this cause I love playing backgammon but I also wanted my 6 year old to start learning the game too. She loves it and like the other reviewer's child, it reinforces her counting skills. I also involve my 3 year old son who helps me roll my dice when it's my turn to move.
The case is not great but it's sufficiently made to carry and hold the pieces. I noticed that the brown paint on the dark pieces have rubbed off a little bit.
But hey, you won't find a lower price or a better value (under $[...]) than this for a backgammon set.
