4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Duty Manual Machine
I've had this tank for over a year. If you get a good grinder with it (Rocky, Zassenhaus, Mazzer Mini) and have a little patience, you'll have no problems making great espresso. The temperature is a perfect 195f. It's easy to 'temperature surf' the boiler to get it exact just before you pull a shot. It can also pump espresso pods if you're not into fussing over the...

2.0 out of 5 stars dud
i suspect i bought a lemon since a model (La Pavoni Lusso) with the same pump has been fabulous. the Portofino yields poor crema if any, is awkward to fill (it's tank is located in the back with a low small hole for filling) and- despite it's sturdy metal body and impressive weight- is a crappy machine.

It can also pump espresso pods if you're not into fussing over the perfect cup. This machine is not a fancy super automatica with built-in refrigerator for your milk, or what ever else those things do, but I haven't been able to choke the pump with an ultrafine espresso grind. It does the job.

A sturdy machine that makes good espresso. The water reservoir is a bit difficult to fill but the 16 bar pump make up for this. I have had some problems with using pods and the basket leaking but seems to be intermittent. Good product for the price seeing most other machines in this price range are plastic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Made in Italy - Old school manufacturing - by hand..., November 26, 2005
This review is from: La Pavoni PA-10W Caffe Portofino Espresso and Cappuccino Machine, White (Kitchen)
Pros:
Steel casing with brass inner tubing (must be hand made)
Heavy & Sturdy (built like a tank)
Heats up fast
Price

Cons:
Messy (appears the distance from cup to filter is higher than normal resulting in a slight spattering of espresso)
Awkward water resivor (need a steady hand to poor water into the res.)
The brand and model graphics are stickers (yes, stickers)

Don't get this if you're a beginner. You need patience to get it right and a burr grinder is mandatory. Only after 12+ attempts do I start experimenting a good crema. Frother works very well for that perfect cappuccino.

There is NO artificial crema contraption like in other "low" cost machines that use filters with smaller than normal pin holes. Therefore practice is necessary.

Sweeten your espresso with pure vermont maple syrup (the expensive stuff)...
