Editorial Reviews

Rey (Garrett Morris) has made it a point to clip his only son's wings whenever he tries to venture off and be his own man. As a result, Mike (Foolish) is stuck working for penny pinching Rey and the oddball TONY (Cool Aide) at the Pawn Shop. The days are never dull as the trio are constantly at each other's throats. When jewelry is stolen from PIERRE (Joe Torry), the most feared person in the city, danger starts to lurk around Mike and the Pawn Shop. Mike learns that everything comes at a price, including doing the right thing.

3.0 out of 5 stars GOT KUSH? April 3, 2013
Rey (Garrett Morris) owns a pawn shop. His underachieving son Mike (Robert Spearman Jr.) works there. Mike dreams of opening a rim shop called "Spinners" where they play "The Spinners" all day long. Ex-con Tony (Cool Aide) also works there. Tony aspires to be on the Best Buy geek squad.

Mike fences behind his dad's back which causes problems when a thug's gold chain is stolen. The film has numerous side characters, with James (Mike McDaniel) the policeman who does bad impersonations being my favorite. This African-American comedy takes place in Detroit at some time when gas was $2.63 a gallon. It includes drug humor, big sassy women, and plenty of booty humor. It pokes fun at black culture including a barber that has that Madea look.

The film was funniest when everyone becomes a BS artist. There were numerous scenes that had me laughing. There were also a lot of scenes that didn't work too well. The classy Garrett Morris who was grossly underutilized on SNL, was again underutilized in his leading role as a straight man. The film bounced around but the plot never moved. It remained stagnant so it could work in various skits, too many of which lacked freshness.

Parental Guide: No f-bombs, sex, or nudity. The language is still saucy with the "A" word frequently used. Sex is implied. Close-up of cleavage and booty. Woman thrusts a man into her cleavage. One background song stops short as it says "mother..." Clearly for adults in spite of cleaning things up.

Very funny low budget movie. The actors maximized their resources and were hilarious. Joe Torrey and Garrett Morris were great! Great shapes on the actresses, too!
