4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Debut from Gilby!
A great debut from Gilby Clarke, after his time filling in for Guns N' Roses' rhythm guitarist and primary songwriter Izzy Stradlin. 2.0 out of 5 stars not what i expected at all
I heard Cure me or Kill Me and Tiujuana Jail on the radio and thought this would be a hard album. Not so - After these two songs which are really good, it turns into practically a country album. I was really caught off guard here. Other GNR members make some nice appearances though.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Debut from Gilby!, February 1, 2008
This review is from: Pawnshop Guitars (Audio CD)
A great debut from Gilby Clarke, after his time filling in for Guns N' Roses' rhythm guitarist and primary songwriter Izzy Stradlin. Opener "Cure Me...or Kill Me" is a nice rocker, but the album really gets started on the third track, "Tijuana Jail," which is a high energy, riff driven hard rocker with some great guitar work. Followed by the acoustic country twang of "Skin & Bones," which plays as an homage (and again later) to The Rolling Stones, and some more killer guitar work on the generally subdued "Johanna's Chopper," it's clear that Gilby has some serious songwriting chops and a variety of inspirations. Title track "Pawn Shop Guitars" is another raucous rocker full of energy and strong guitar work, before a second tribute to The Rolling Stones with a cover of "Dead Flowers," featuring Axl Rose on guest vocals, and in all honesty, Gilby does away with the hokey country approach taken by The Stones and improves the song a good deal. Bluesy, southern tinged "Hunting Dogs" is a highlight, near the end of the album, before closer "Shut Up," a medium paced track with, again, some good guitar work.

Seriously, if you don't like this, then you probably just don't like rock n' roll. Move on to a different genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gilby rocks - re-release this kick ass CD, March 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pawnshop Guitars (Audio CD)
Gilby rocks and does not look back at his GNR past. This is an absolute watershed rock and roll CD. If you are into guitar rock and are bored with the Green Days and Goo Goo Dolls of the world, come to papa - this album sweats no-nonsense rock drive

Gilby is just pure genius. That said I just got this album today and I love it! Perfect. I do agree with the fellow above or below me who said that it is much better for the musically talented. I love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!, October 20, 2008
This review is from: Pawnshop Guitars (Audio CD)
This is one of the greatest albums ever made! I bought it the day it came out in 1994 and I am on my 4th or fifth copy. I finally broke down and got it on Mp3. Gilby is a stellar performer and brilliant song writer. You would be had pressed to find another artist of his caliber in today's industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Music, not for the Casual Listener, August 8, 2008
This review is from: Pawnshop Guitars (Audio CD)
I first saw this guy on YouTube playing Paradise City with Guns N' Roses on the 1992 Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. I was immediately hooked. I have watched that video like 50 times or something. I wanted to hear more from this guy.

So I heard this song, "Tijuana Jail", again on YouTube. Absolutely amazing. Inspired me to practice harder on my guitar. So I got my hands on this album. To be honest, I was REALLY disappointed. Even this song everyone was talking about, "Cure Me...or Kill Me", really sucked for me at that time.

A few months later, I decided to give this album a second try. This time it was absolutely amazing. The bass line in "Cure Me...or Kill Me" is really good. My favorite song on this album is probably track number 6, "Let's Get Lost". It's a very happy, optimistic track, just like I am a very optimistic person. Here is the part of the song that I can relate to the most:

Let's get lost
Lost in Space
Just two people a little out of place
Nothing's wrong
Everything's fine
Just lost in time

One word of caution though: this is definitely not music for the casual listener. People actively playing a musical instrument(preferably guitar, bass or drums) will most likely enjoy this way more than anyone else.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is Gilby Clarke's BEST!!, October 17, 2007
This review is from: Pawnshop Guitars (Audio CD)
Truly awesome CD! Just got it today, and quickly added Tijuana Jail and his cover of The Stones' "Dead Flowers" to my top songs of all time!! Gilby's Tijuana jail rocks with riffs by Slash, and Dead Flowers stars W. Axl Rose, the first ever CD I have heard w/ Rose, that wasn't GNR...(although anxiously awaiting Bach's new CD in Nov). Duff, Slash, and Matt Sorum star in other songs, but Gilby is an awesome guitarist and has great lyrics. Of all of the GNR members, it is hard to decide whose solo tunes I like best, but I can say Gilby is hard to beat!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ok Who's the smart guy who let this go Out of print, June 20, 2006

This is a great debut from ex Guns guitarist Gilby Clarke originally released back in 1994. I have the Japanese release which has the bonus track West of the Sunset which isn't on the US or UK releases. The Japanese release is 2nd time I've owned this (1st was in 94 back when it first was released when living in the UK) This deserves a re-release as its been out of print for far too long. Bring this release back in print Gilby deserves our money :) His debut is by far his best work and effort.

Gilby proves that he can leave Guns n Roses behind and rock just as well. Cure me or Kill me just absolutely rocks. Good guitar work and great appearances by Matt Sorum, Slash and Duff and oh yeah, AXL!

This is definitely Gilby's best album. I've been a fan for a long time (since Kill for Thrills) and this is an awesome album! There are great rock songs on it like Cure Me or Kill Me and great covers too!
