Book Description

April 7, 2001 0333945980 978-0333945988 Reprint
After a turbulent century characterized by vast bloodshed, but also by the spread of democratic government and humane values, the author suggests that the great democracies--led by Britain, France, Germany, Japan and the US--should form an intercontinental community of democracies--Pax Democratica according to the author. He argues that such a union will culminate centuries of evolution in world order: from empires to balance-of-power Realpolitik, more recently from cooperative international institutions to an era of supranational communities, composed of likeminded peoples and organized around democratic principles.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“This important book makes an impressive case for the construction of 'an Intercontinental community of Democracies' . . . refreshingly undogmatic . . . innovative proposals by which existing structures like NATO might be re-configured and new ones created.” —Foreign Affairs

“What Huntley has accomplished is to introduce a compelling new internationalist vision and present a well-reasoned argument for its acceptance in the language used by decision-makers . . . Huntley's overall vision of an international community of democracies is the best foreign policy strategy imaginable for America to pursue in the next century.” —Washington Free Press

4.0 out of 5 stars An idea whose time may come, October 11, 2000

Some ideas are so basic that it takes a whole book to work out their implications. Such is the concept behind "Pax Democratica," a rather detailed proposal for getting democratic governments organized for mutual support in the ongoing struggle against tyranny and despotism.

"Pax Democratica" could turn out to be a breakthrough in thinking about the future. Or we could just stick to science-fiction dystopias and the globalization of oppression ... take your pick!

(The average reader will not need all the information on the rating system for various democracies, hence this 5 star idea gets 4 stars on the basis of readability. But perhaps it's unfair to hold a serious policy proposal to the same standards as a more popular work.)
