cynical pop...i pictured a singer with a sly smirk on his face pretending to be arrogant. pretending, because there is an honesty to the songs on this ep that, when mixed with the whitty lyrics, creates a refreshing new pop sound. this might be what fountains of wayne would sound like if they were served by one too many bad waitresses.

"Don't believe the hype, swallow the pill yourself!",

Is there such a thing as Number One with a bullet? "Knock me to my knees boys, and I don't mean for what a rock star always desires!" But man, POP goes BOOM! Paxton isn't the best, 'cause there's no such thing. But I'll tell ya somethin'...Paxton is Now! Hip pop diddys clingin' to the back of my shoe demanding action. Forget pretense. That's a given with every rock star persona. Just listen to the hooks! Hit it & play air guitar, catch the kit & bass pound out the rhythm section....man these cats fair well with any classic Top hit. You can compare, but why? Because like it or hate it, it makes no difference to me. I know what I like. Do what ya want. I'm busy listenin' to Paxton.

I must admit, my first copy of Paxton's CD was a gift. I have since purchased 2 more copies to give to friends... I love this guy! It's the kind of record you find yourself singing along to before you even realize that the lyrics are razor sharp and profound. Paxton is a gifted songwriter, and his voice has a sexy raw edge. Check this cd out, then make a friend check it out too.

A Rock Album That Tears Me Away From My Disco,
By

As a 30-something disco-frequenting queer, a chance encounter with this album was a welcome relief from heavy bass lines and a return to the rock music I grew up with. John & Joe is a powerful rock ballad that evokes gay life in NYC's East Village (imagine a more musically sophisticated gay counter-part to Rent, perhaps) in the pre-protease era, while Fatherless will speak to any guy who's been estranged from his dad (and who hasn't been?). A real refreshing return to rock, with a definite queer vibe.

Catchy tunes with great lyrics,

I bought this CD after seeing Paxton open for Stephen Stills at the Fillmore in San Fran. These guys are the real deal, writing catchy tunes with great lyrics. Songs like "I'm Not Like Anybody Else" address the pressure to conform in the world, while "Fatherless Sons" combines a tug-at-the-heart story with hard hitting musical backing. There are a few gender twister songs thrown in as well. Paxton's unique rasp may not please everyone, but I find myself coming back to the cd more often than I expected to. Buy the CD and catch the show if you get the chance.

I dare you to say there's not one song you like on this cd,

I first heard this cd when Paxton played at the HR cafe in Atlantic City, summer of '98. It was the first time in 20 years that a band caught my attention like Bowie did when he first came out in the 70's. There's something for everyone on this cd. But the main thing, is that there is some serious songwriting talent here. I've seen them many times since then and they are always the best live. And for anyone who is an Ann Rice fan, the new song, That Dammed Queen Song is a must have.

Guilty pleasures that inspire no guilt,

Bands that can effectively use the phrase "woo hoo" are very few and far between. I'd say Track #3 (So Into You) is the most effective use of a "woo hoo" since Blur's Song 2. Usually woo hoos inspire a sort of sheepish smile, like "i am so embarrased that I am partaking in woo hoos." But don't feel guilty for loving pop candy. WOO HOO for Paxton!

Paxton is a great live show!,

Last Friday some friends conned me into going out to CBGB's for an evening of gender-bender acts (a la David Bowie, The Kinks, The Posies, etc). I thought it was going to be a lame evening of whimppy east village poser bands, but man was I surprised! Paxton was the first act onstage that night and the minute he walked on I was glad that we decided to get there early. They put on a show that was so polished and energetic that I was asking everyone I was with why I hadn't heard of them before. The songs they sang had depth and sarcasm. The kind of traditional rock fare that keeps us going out to clubs in the first place. The musicianship was first rate. I bought 2 copies of the CD from them after the show and they haven't left my player since! These guys are a must see band for the new millenium. Good Luck guys!!!

Paxton At CBGB's,

From the moment Paxton walked onstagewe all knew that magic was about to happen. Paxton sang with such energy and sincerity that it was impossible not to go along with their 45 minute emotional journey of story songs! The band was strong and took control of the stage in a way tjhat would have made Mick Jagger proud! In particular, David, the lead guitarist stood out as a one-of-kind player with enough flair and style to add real visual appeal! Definately one of the better bands to come through New York in the last year!

This album is the best album I have ever heard in my whole entire life. Every song is just wonderful and emotional, whoa I don't do what else to say. The sad thing is I only know the album, and what it could tell me about the artist. But I don't know where he is today. Is he still making music? Is he singing live somwhere? He only made one album and a half(have yet to hear ginger's dish) but man it would be so wonderful to hear him sing live, however it seems he had retired. He is so completely underrated. Well I wish Paxton the best, and want to thank him for making such an beautifully written album. It touched me in such a personal level. Anywayz, I listen to the whole album all the time. My mayor highlights with the album were:
1)Which Way Do You Go? I wanted to listen to another song and I clicked this one by accident. I liked how it sounded so I just let it play. The lyrics just did it for me. As a bisexual man myself, it's kinda hard to find songs like these. This song practically outed me out lol it helped me with my sexuality. Years of confusion went away when I first listen to this song. I knew who I was now. The lyrics, instrumental, and his voice, makes it such a smart fun song. 2) John and Joe Another paxton classic. I immediately identify myself as John, unfortenly, and I'm sure alot of gay/bisexual men would connect with the lyrics. The instrumental was really nice, the lyrics spot on, and although it is a bit funny at times, the song overall is depressive, because of what happens to both of them towards the end :( love can be a tragedy sometimes heh... 3)Falling Behind Times sometimes goes too fast, and you feel like the world is ingoring you and moving on without you. heh. pretty much describes the song. This song helped me through college since as I was going through my "catcher in the rye" moments heh. He just a way with his lyrics and voice, it makes you feel like you're not alone. 4)Fatherless Sons Damn I cried listening to this the first time. He just poured his heart out. Beautiful song. 5) Morning Song Ahhh I love this LOL i have it as my alarm song. Little birdies leave their nest and get pushed out to the real world :/ its so short yet it says so much. I love ALL his songs, but these are my favorites. I heard of ginger dish recently, since i bought paxton's albums late unfortenly. I was pretty young when he released his first album, and I discovered him only about a year ago, at 20 years old. Too bad, I heard he used to sing live. I cant believe people like lady gaga and all that other emotionless artists gets attention for their garbage but people like paxton don't get much.....paxton, you were completely underrated :/ well i hope everything is ok with ya. |
