More About the Author

Melinda Metz grew up in San Jose, California. People sometimes ask if she knows the way there. She kinda does, but she has an off-kilter sense of direction, so to be confident of arriving, it's better to consult some kind of navigational device.

Her mother tried to teach her to read in kindergarten, but Melinda had no interest. She also had no interest in learning to write her name. (FYI, when Melinda was in kindergarten it was all about finger-painting, play time, and naps.) Eventually, she mastered both and even majored in English at San Jose State University.

After college, Melinda moved to Manhattan to seek her fortune, which involved learning to identify fruits and vegetables while working at a grocery store,
making $2.73 working backstage for an off-off Broadway play (her part of the box-office profits), and editing books.

Melinda and the lovely and talented Laura J. Burns pretty much became unofficial writing partners when they were editors at the same company. They teamed up to brainstorm story ideas, and at some point their brains fused in some key places. Later they worked on the Roswell High book series, Laura developing and editing the series, Melinda writing.

That series led to Melinda and Laura, now an official writing team, writing two TV pilots, moving to L.A. to work on the Roswell TV show, and briefly living in Toronto while on the writing staff of 1-800-Missing. They both continue to write books, together and separately.

Melinda has never regretted learning to read and write her name.

5.0 out of 5 stars The thrilling conclusion to the Fingerprints series., February 5, 2002
This review is from: Payback (Fingerprints No. 7) (Paperback)
Rae got the shock of her life when she found out Yana, her supposed best friend, was the one who was trying to kill her. But Yana's locked away where she can't cause any harm. And Rae and Anthony are together and happy. But then Aiden shows up, with the news that Yana has escaped. Rae is terrified that Yana will try to kill her again. But what is Yana really after? Is she still determined to kill Rae? Or has she learned the truth, and directed her rage at the agency? Rae knows that if Yana goes up against the agency, she'll never win. But would Yana ever listen to Rae, and can she even be trusted? I highly recommend this conclusion to the Fingerprints series. The end was really thrilling and surprising. I just wish there was another book, because the end did leave some questions unanswered.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lifelong rage..., February 7, 2002
This review is from: Payback (Fingerprints No. 7) (Paperback)
Rae has come to the end of a terrifying and unbelievable struggle. After living with the awkwardness of knowing that her powers make her very unique, and after facing off against what seemed like more than one enemy in her life, the battle is at last over. She has Anthony and has found the freedom of being alive after so many deadly encounters. Now, as she prepares to move on in high school and make more friends, the betrayal of Yana will forever live in her mind -- a betrayal that was deeper than anything Rae could have ever imagined. But those thoughts don't even compare to when Aiden returns and tells Rae and Anthony that Yana has escaped prison. Rae knows just how deadly Yana can be -- she knows the hatred and rage burning inside the mind of the girl who used be her best friend. She knows that Yana is the most dangerous person in the world to her. And she also knows that her powers -- the ability to read thoughts through a person's fingerprints -- may not be able to help her this time. Can Rae get yet Yana to discover the truth before it's too late -- even if that will be the hardest thing to do? Rae has seen and faced unbelievable battles in her life ever since her powers to read fingerprints started. But the battle she now faces may be the most ultimate battle of all. Fingerprints #7: Payback is the long-awaited and excellent conclusion of Melinda Metz's powerfully absorbing Fingerprints series. I am going to sorely miss this series, from the first spellbinding book to its worthy conclusion, as a series that has a special place in the hearts of readers everywhere. Fingerprints is among the most extraordinary series out there, and in only seven books, it has turned into a masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars End of a great series..., November 23, 2004
By
This review is from: Payback (Fingerprints No. 7) (Paperback)
This last book has everything that was left to happen in the series. Rae and Anthony are together and they've both said the 'i love you' thing. Yana learns the truth behind her mother's murder and finally believes Rae had nothing to do with it. I had a lot of questions about Mandy's power after reading the sixth book. All confusion got cleared at the end of this one! Marcus and Anthony have a slight face-to-face. I was really hoping they'd have one! So basically the series is complete, no lose ends. Even though there's no clear explanation behind why Rae's English teacher was so slimy and creepy. Excepting this the book has all the answers you can want.

Really sad to think there's no more Rae and Anthony stuff to read out there!! I wish Melinda Metz would start another series. Soon!
