Karima "C.R.E.A.M." Thomas stands before a judge as an accomplice in the murders of two drug dealers. Suddenly, a scream tears through the courtroom, and when the smoke clears, her mother lies dying on the floor. Soon, others in Karima’s family are targeted, and one thing becomes clear: Unless she finds the killer first, Karima will be the next to die. With the help of Captain Kevin Lynch, Karima races to untangle a web of family secrets that threaten her very life. As she unlocks the shocking truth about her past, Karima closes in on the killer, and in a deadly struggle against an enemy as ruthless as herself, Karima is determined to get one thing – payback.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

At the start of Jones's explosive sequel to C.R.E.A.M. (2007), just as a Philadelphia judge is about to rule that Karima "Cream" Thomas must stand trial for the murder of her boyfriend, Duane Faision, who died defending her in the previous book, a scream is heard outside the courtroom. Practically everyone in the court, including Karima, rushes into the hallway, where Karima's mother, Sharon Thomas, lies dying with a puncture wound in her neck. Karima vows vengeance on the ice pick murderer, who turns out to be fiendishly clever Troy Williams, a former FBI profiler with a long grudge list. In the next 24 hours, as Troy starts bumping off all those he believes have wronged him, it becomes clear only Karima can stop his rampage. Jones's African-American female avenger breathes fresh air into a stale stereotype. (Mar.)

From Booklist

Jones brings back Karima “C.R.E.A.M.” Thomas, on trial for her part in murdering two drug dealers and whose mother is stabbed as she sits in the courtroom. Karima is acquitted, but her mother dies after admitting a long-hidden secret. Homicide Captain Kevin Lynch is drawn to C.R.E.A.M. and married more to his job than to his wife and family, and now his job is helping Karima find justice. Crucial to the mounting body count is the vengeful Troy, survivor of foster-care abuse, now muscled up, 23, and determined to kill the seven people on his list. Finding a way out of one’s world is the only solution left when that world is a North Philly neighborhood where thugs drive Mercedes, groom 13-year-olds for crime, and wear $1,000 sunglasses, and where cops are too intimidated by gangs to enforce parking violations. Can there be hope in “a place where generations of people lived under the twin weights of poverty and one another”? What can stop the cycle? Watch for the sequel. --Whitney Scott

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely kept my interest!, February 6, 2010
This review is from: Payback: The Return of C.R.E.A.M. (Hardcover)
My initial reason for purchasing this book is because of an error made by my public library-I never checked out the book, yet the library was showing I did. Rather than fight them and their policy, I just purchased a replacement. When the book arrived, I was going to immediately take the book to the library to get credit, but after reading the introduction, I decided to read it. I was pleasantly surprised. The beautiful and classy Karima Thomas, a.k.a, "Cream", was determined to get her payback. She had help from someone no one would suspect. Shocking family secrets were revealed in the process but you'll have to read the book to find out if Cream got her payback!

4.0 out of 5 stars Gotta' be a part 3, December 8, 2009

This review is from: Payback: The Return of C.R.E.A.M. (Hardcover)
The sequel is definitely a page turner. Much like "Ride or Die" you are looking for the main characters to break through with profundity, but the creativeness of Mr. Jones will not allow it. There were many twists and turns and I must admit I did not like where you were taking Lynch in reference to the romantic connection with Karima. Thanks for saving the day for marriage and faithfulness. I would have lost respect for Lynch. Why couldn't Karmina and Troy have a civil conversation first before continuing the mayhem? I am glad however that she slipped out of this one. Don't take too long to write part three. I have to know how she and Skeet made out, especially since he replaces her blood brother. Lynch and his family need some excitement and who knows, maybe Jamal and Keisha will show up in this one.

Well done---good writers keep in coming!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars hmm, it was ok, August 4, 2009

This review is from: Payback: The Return of C.R.E.A.M. (Hardcover)
This book was just ok. I got lost in some of the detail, a lil too wordy. It explained how some people were connected to each other and why things were happening the way they were.
