Book Description

Superintendent Mike Yeadings Mysteries September 30, 2008

This latest from genre veteran Clare Curzon makes a thrilling addition to this entertaining series.

Sandy Craddock witnesses his detested half brother deliberately mown down by a hit-and-run driver outside his place of work, and he guiltily assumes that he himself was the intended victim. Convinced the killers will strike again once they discover they’ve targeted the wrong man, Sandy goes on the run, leaving his boss to wrongly identify the heavily bandaged and comatose Warren Laing as his missing employee.

In a daze, Sandy takes refuge in Warren’s luxurious apartment. However, it isn’t long before a mysterious woman turns up at Warren’s home and takes charge of Sandy’s complex situation, enrolling them both in an arts course in an isolated castle. When one of the students is murdered, Sandy realizes he’s in too deep. But how can he distance himself from the enchanting Fiona, who has her own secrets to hide, or explain to the police why he’s impersonating his critically injured brother? Caught in a web of his own making, Sandy realizes he is opening himself up to more danger than he could ever have imagined.

Superintendent Mike Yeadings of the Thames Valley team must unravel the web of deceit in the present, while also under pressure to solve a cold case resurrected from the past.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

At the outset of Curzon's entertaining 21st Mike Yeadings mystery (after 2007's The Edge), a biker deliberately runs down Warren Laing, Sandy Craddock's estranged half-brother, outside the auction house where Sandy works as an auctioneer's porter. Sandy, who assumes he was the biker's intended victim, decides to pose as the flashy Warren after learning that Warren, who's in a coma in the hospital, has been mistakenly identified as himself. Just as he enters the charade, Sandy runs into the headstrong Fiona Morgan, who has an investigative interest in the real Warren. Looking to hide out, Sandy accepts Fiona's invitation to join her at a Berkshire castle, where, among other surprises, a dying woman knocks on Sandy's bedroom door one night. The intricately woven plot takes off in disparate directions, but Curzon methodically brings all the threads together as the members of Yeadings's Thames Valley CID team strive to figure out whodunit. 3.0 out of 5 stars Supporting Characters Emphasized, August 19, 2009

This review is from: Payback: A Superintendent Mike Yeadings Mystery (Superintendent Mike Yeadings Mysteries) (Hardcover)
Clare Curzon's newest Superintendent Mike Yeadings mystery, Payback, is not as strong as many others in the series, at least in part because Yeatings is decidedly secondary to this plot. The strong supporting characters from the earlier novels--DCI Angus Mott, DS Rosemary "Z" Zyczynski, DS Beaumont, DS Salmon--take the lead in solving what seems to be a series of unrelated crimes. Thames Valley CID is stretched thin as a young child is reported missing; a pedestrian is run down by a hit and run motorcyclist and is misidentified; a woman is murdered and her body disappears from an adult education center. Without doing a spoiler, suffice it to say that all are not separate crimes. Much of the action is seen through the eyes of Sandy Craddock, a self-educated antiquarian who becomes involved with Fiona Morgan, who has her own agenda; other sections shift frequently between the various CID officers. These rapid shifts make the plot more disjointed than usual. Curzon has created a cast of characters who continue to develop as individuals and in relation to each other. Even though it is not the strongest in the series, Payback is definitely worth the read, especially if you enjoy character-driven stories that emphasize neither gore nor violence.
