5.0 out of 5 stars Basically an instruction manual for sex industry patrons, October 6, 2004
This review is from: Paying for It: A Guide by Sex Workers for Their Clients (Paperback)
The American sex industry rivals the revenues and numbers of employees of several Fortune 500 companies combined. Quiet literally a multi-billion dollar industry, this area of the service industry operates quite similarly to any other in terms of workers and managers getting better revenue flow through better service hallmarked with courtesy, empathy, and professionalism. Paying For It: A Guide By Sex Workers For Their Clients is basically an instruction manual for sex industry patrons to obtaining the most for the money in terms of quality and quantity -- just as they would any other type of commercial transaction for any other type of product or service. Knowledgeably compiled and expertly edited by Greata Christina, Paying For It is a combination consumer handbook and an etiquette manual. Very strongly recommended reading for anyone interested in sex work, whether as a provider or a consumer, Paying For It is virtually unique, expertly informative, and reliably authoritative reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting viewpoints, August 26, 2004

This review is from: Paying for It: A Guide by Sex Workers for Their Clients (Paperback)
This book is interesting in that it speaks of a topic most would prefer to be swept under the carpet somewhere, ie conduct and etiquette when dealing with sex workers of any kind. It's a subject most would rather avoid discussing, but as long as it indeed exists and will never go away, there might as well be a book about this topic. And what struck me about the approximately 30 essays in the book from professional dominants, prostitutes, strippers and escorts was a common theme. The "theme" being that anyone visiting any type of sex worker should treat them like any other worker, by being polite and well-groomed (ie making sure to bathe before visiting one!). While I'm not in the habit of using any sex worker-related services (although one never knows), it floors me to think people just assume because a sex worker is in an "illegal" trade that it gives them the right to be rude or unkempt. It somehow seems common sense to me the nicer you treat someone, the nicer generally they'll treat you. While there are numerous other "rules of etiquette" these sex workers discuss, it seems you'll have a better time by being well-mannered.

This truly is a book that deserves to be available, even if the topic is one that makes some uncomfortable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Sex Industry, August 4, 2005
This review is from: Paying for It: A Guide by Sex Workers for Their Clients (Paperback)
What is really terrific about this book is the fact that it incorporates so many different voices, giving varying perspectives on the question. Too often people know about one aspect of the sex industry and make assumptions that they understand everything that there is to understand about it; this book gives enough perspectives to discourage -- though obviously not eliminate -- that assumption.

At times funny and smart, casual and intense, the voices here will make sex work approachable and understandable to those who are just thinking about it, either as potential clients or potential workers, and provide valuable insights into the culture and ethos of the business before faux pas can be made. For those who are just curious, it's an excellent introduction to *some* of the people who live in this world.
