Freda Payne first hit big with the #1 hit Band Of Gold recorded in 1971 for Holland/Dozier/Holland's Invictus label. She sued to get out of her contract in 1973 and moved to ABC/Dunhill Records. Payne & Pleasure was the first of two albums for the label and was produced by the legendary Lamont Dozier (at the time, someone else was credited, for legal reasons!). Available for the first time on CD, the album is the perfect example of mid-70s soul with lush orchestrations, real instruments and many star contributors including Joe Sample, Ernie Watts, Gene Page, Melvin ''Wah Wah'' Ragin and McKinley Jackson. The 16 page full-color booklet includes previously unpublished Harry Langdon photos, an extensive essay drawing on interviews with both Freda Payne and Lamont Dozier, plus rare memorabilia.

This is Freda's first recording after she left Invictus. It contains the R&B single It's Yours to Have which I just love. I Get Carried Away is a beautiful ballad which should have been a big hit. Don't Wanna be Left out in Rain is a 6 plus minute semi- ballad which reminds me a little bit of I'm Not Getting Any Better from the Contact LP. The covers of I Won't Last a Day Without You, The Way We Were and A Song for You are amazing. A Song for You starts off in the original tempo and she really rocks after 3 minutes into the song. I have a CDR of this LP but really wish someone would release this on CD one day. This is one of my favorites LP's by the gorgeous and talented FP! And what art work! The back cover is pretty good also!

Here we have another example of stellar performances never released on cd. Fine arrangements by McKinley Jackson and super songs such as 'Run For Your Life', 'Yours To Have', 'Carried Away' and many more sonic gems. Here's hoping that one day soon we may be able to obtain this music once again in digital form.

I have been waiting for this cd since I put my turntable into storage sometime in the late '80s. This is one of the all time great albums; a must hear; a must see. Wow. How happy am I? Very. Thank you.
