This review is from: Payoff Artillery- WW II: The Wide-Ranging Combat of the Battalion that Fought under Five Armies and Eight Divisions in the European Theatre (Hardcover)
A first person, no-frills, "tell it like it is" account of the 283rd Light Field Artillery Battalion serving in the ETO during WWII. If you enjoy personal accounts of action in WWII, author Frank Armstrong has written one to add to your collection. The 283rd fought up and down the ETO front in a variety of battles and experiences that provide a good overview for what the field artillery went through in the ETO.The only real feel for US field artillery action in the ETO I had read before was either too generic, or too limited. Ernie Pyle had written a good account, but it was only so long. Frank Armstrong gives us a strong narrative of the field artillery with his "I was there - this is what we did" story. Excellent read - highly recommended. |
