RARELY READS CARDS
on January 10, 2014
Pay Pal advertises a rate for cards that are swiped and a higher rate when you don't swipe
It would be nice to get the lower rate, but the reader RARELY works, so you end up paying another 1/2% higher
It will work if the card is new or like new, and that applies to about 1 in 20..
So I end up fumbling while customer is waiting to either photo scan card(which works only if there's enough contrast in card color) or having to read and punch every number onto the phone
All told, it ends up taking several minutes to run a transaction through, if you don't hit a wrong key., and you pay about 3 4% on each transaction, not the advertised rate. And what customer wants to hang around while you're trying to finish the sale?
I am hoping something else comes along. Otherwise, it's back to the traditional CC processor VERY soon
I have called and emailed Pay Pal numerous times and they send you chasing tail, blaming it on everything but the crappy reader which is probably designed to force manual entries. Makes $$ sense for EBay, the owner of pay pal..
Square has since become available for Android. What a pleasure after struggling with Pay Pal. Simple process. No logging in of password on tiny phone keypad. Just make sure internet is on, hit icon, plug in reader, type in amount, swipe card, goes through in seconds and have had NO failures. Reads every time. Transactions are a relative breeze. Not so great as far as being user friendly or instructions, but neither was Pay Pal and at least the swipes work
