This is a good classroom text however more work than usual is required to learn this subject due to the mundane detail that must be covered in the first 5 chapters.

After 30 years as a payroll professional, I still refer to this text as even the older editions are an invaluable basic payroll accounting resource. In the seventies it was the only comprehensive textbook available to me after finding myself literally thrown into the payroll department, and although I had a very helpful mentor for learning the payroll system, it was so helpful in understanding how what we did in our department affected the accounting system. Time is always at a premium in payroll and this book gave me the accounting answers I needed quickly and correctly. Whether you do an in house payroll as a clerk or a manager you'll learn plenty from studying this text. And even if the bank or a service actually does the payroll for you, this book will give you the knowledge you need to interface with accounting and increase your ability to perform your job well.

This is a classroom textbook that offers a CD. It is full of exercises that do not provide a detailed explaination if you wanted to use it to learn how to do payroll on your own. The chapters are in good order.
