Editorial Reviews

This program of French song marks the solo debut recording of the brilliant young soprano, Susanna Phillips. Ms. Phillips was the recipient of the Metropolitan Opera's 2010 Beverly Sills Artist Award, and appeared at the Met last season as Pamina in Julie Taymor's production of The Magic Flute, and as Musetta in La bohème, the role with which she made her Met debut in 2008. Following her Baltimore Symphony debut under Marin Alsop, the Baltimore Sun proclaimed, "She's the real deal!" In the banner year of 2005, Susanna Phillips was the winner of four of the world's leading vocal competitions Operalia (both First Place and the Audience Prize), the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the MacAllister Awards and the George London Foundation. Susanna Phillips's triumphs have taken her to The Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Minnesota Opera, Santa Fe Opera, the Dallas Opera, the Boston Lyric Opera and many others a star in the making!

Talk about an incredibly sincere, uplifting vocal journey. I found myself genuinely moved by the sheer narrative quality of the recording. A combination of warmth and clarity in the sound so well suited to the "landscapes" depicted. Also, what exquisite French!

Ms. Phillips has a fine instrument--a lovely sound and good musicianship. But she is more singer than interpreter, and I am not convinced that she has penetrated very far into the music (she is young). I understand the high regard for her one hears or reads about, but for me she remains promising but not yet fully formed as an artist. In this music (Messaien et. al.) you need to make the listener feel you have something to say about the relation of words to music--this does not quite happen here.

Beautiful lyrics from Ms. Phillips. A most enjoyable recording to relax with a good cup of tea or coffee! I think this young lady will go far in her vocal career! A rising star for sure.

I agree with the other reviews. This album is a real find. Gorgeous tone, marvelous phrasing and perception, and sympathetic and effective accompaniment from Huang. Nice programming of the
Messaien Poemes Pour Mi as contrast to the other fare. And while obviously fine lyric soprano tone, Ms. Phillips also has some effective 'grit' when she needs it for expression. I look forward to hearing more from her.
