5.0 out of 5 stars Very Beautiful Music
A true guitar virtuoso, I met Scott on Venice Beach CA in 1991. I thought I was hearing at least 3 guitarists playing together, but it was just Scott. The truly amazing part is that he can recreate all of this live.

He taught himself how to play, but the genetics were already there. You have got to hear this stuff.

1.0 out of 5 stars Michael Hedges -- With all the Character, none of the Vision
Ahhhhh! If there is one thing I blame Hedges for, it is the spawn of pale imitators and wankers he left in his passing. Nowadays you've got all sorts of charlatans slapping their beat-up, badly amplified Martins with their feet or elbows or whatever manner of appendage. Some even attempt to ape his BoHo-yogi-hippie weirdness.

The whole album is just a...

I played the cd in Maine one winter on MooseHead lake and 7 or 8 deer entered the yard of the camp I was staying at and started jumping around to the music, true story, I've never seen anything like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transformative Music...., July 7, 2003

I have been reading the other reviews and can think of nothing exceptional to say other than to exponentially echo all of the positive comments. This album in particular is my favorite of Scott's. He's an amazing individual and his musical abilities reflect that. These little sound bites don't really do the album justice. And as great as this album is, though, hearing him live in concert is completely out of this world!

I saw Scott in concert on a Yoga Cruise and was just stunned by his playing. He is an einstein on the guitar. At first his concert was so unusual that I was disoriented and later I realized that it was because I had become so disconnected with nature and the inner music of the earth that resides all around us. I had become too plastic, artificial, and contrived over time. What Scott does is tap into that inner voice that is in all of us that we often ignore. After listening to his music over and over I feel like I am rising from the dead and learning to tap into that life force through his music. Becoming more open, optimistic, hopeful and in touch with the beauty of life and nature.

This is the absolute best CD I have ever listened to. I met Scott at a small venue, and what a genuine person. He is amazing in his technique and reaches all audiences through his talent. I promise, you will not be dissapointed.

I did not realize how much a guitar can do. There is no limit how deep one can get into these sounds.

Scott's artistry is truly cosmic. He taps into to a higher consciousness and shares that with his guitar and the sounds vibrating from it. Truly a gift. Allow it to take you to a higher place.

1.0 out of 5 stars Michael Hedges -- With all the Character, none of the Vision, June 26, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Peace Dance (Audio CD)

The whole album is just a structureless noodling around. Although there are some promising, yet predictable, chord progressions, they never become any more than pretty skeletons under undefined slush. There seems to be no purpose in why he would place a harmonic there, or slap the guitar here. It's more like a showcase for technique than it is an actual attempt at music. Where are the harmonies? The melody? The mood? Who cares if this guy knows "200 open tunings?" The guy sounds like the tunings are playing him not the other way around. These tricks, instead of helping or breaking down barriers, hinder creativity and innovation. Please, just give up the gimmicks and be honest to yourself. Even the song titles have this ring of dishonesty to them. Need I mention the album art?

I'm not saying you should sound exactly like Hedges (DON'T) if you care to cop his techniques, nonetheless, I'll do a side-by-side comparison and let you be the judge. Huckabay coaxes similar sounds out of his guitar but Hedges' superior compositions let you hear the SONG, not the technique.

Exhibit A. Huckabay's "Labyrinth" vs Hedges' "Aerial Boundaries" from his Aerial Boundaries (1984) release.

Exhibit B. Huckabay's "Sister Ritual" vs Hedges' "Ritual Dance" (coincidence?) from his Taproot (1990) release.

Exhibit C. Huckabay's "Into The Spirit" vs Hedges' "Rickover's Dream" from his Aerial Boundaries (1984) release.

Exhibit D. Hedges' deceptively simple tune "The Naked Stalk" (Taproot) has all the complexity and harmony Huckabay's pyrotechnics are unable express. (On the yang side, the chakra-opening "Rootwitch" on the same release)

But really, I don't care how you play the guitar or whatever instrument. Or from what mystical dolphin in some enchanted spring you got your ideas from. Just know that if you want your stuff to have any lasting impact outside of your drum circle or yoga class, it should strike a universal chord, not a clunky, jarring DADGAD open chord.

Let's hope his anonymous "music fans" give Michael a little listen.
