Biography

A musical force equipped with the soulful vocals of Janis and the guitar slinging skills of Stevie Ray, Carolyn Wonderland reaches into the depths of the Texas blues tradition with the wit of a poet. She hits the stage with unmatched presence, a true legend in her time.

“She'd grown up the child of a singer in a band and began playing her mother's vintage Martin guitar ... Read more in Amazon's Carolyn Wonderland Store

Editorial Reviews

2011 album from the hotly-tipped singer/songwriter. There is a common reaction when people first hear Carolyn Wonderland, which is best summed up by the LA Times quote: ''She's ... more the real deal. Sure, there are lots of other pretty faces out there who can sing, and maybe they can even play a few leads on the guitar. But once you witness the raw emotional power and originality of Carolyn's vocals and guitar playing, you are left stunned.

She is a stunningly good performer, with passionate and powerful vocals, wonderful guitar (and trumpet!), and a really tight band.

I'd been hearing about Carolyn Wonderland for a couple of years now, mostly via keeping up with the Midnight Rambles, but also on Imus. So, I was very excited when I was able to secure reservations for her latest appearance at Levon Helm's Ramble.

I knew to expect an incendiary performance; I did not expect her to leave a smoking crater in the woods along Plochmann Lane in Woodstock. She is a stunningly good performer, with passionate and powerful vocals, wonderful guitar (and trumpet!), and a really tight band. She performed several cuts from this new album, so, of course, I had to buy it as soon as her set ended. Even got her to sign it with a personal inscription. She's a very sweet and gracious woman.

My trip home to New Hampshire was quite pleasant, listening to this album. It is a great representation of the music we heard in The Barn, and one that every blues fan should love. This woman does her own thing, she's not trying to be Janis, but there are moments when she's really belting it out, her long hair flying everywhere, that can really send a chill down your spine. By all means, buy this album. If you like it (and you will), find out where she's playing and go see her.

Five stars are not enough.

I first saw Carolyn at Antone's in Austin about four years ago. It was absolutley awesome. One of the best blues reviews I've ever seen. Words can't describe it. I had seen her on other occassions there, and her Christmas show there was the greatest. I got the opportunity to sit and chat with her after the show and the crowd had thinned. What an amazing, individual. Such a sweet, personalbe and humble a person for the power house entertainer she is. I can truly say that I love this woman to death and I never miss any opportunity I get to see her. If you haven't seen her, you must. Ya, Janis and Bonnie all rolled into one. I simply can't say enough.

Man, this album was three years in the making and well worth it! Ray Benson (9-time Grammy Winner) has done it again producing this magical CD full of surreal vocals, killer guitar riffs, supreme bass/key riffs and rock-solid drumming. A must have for any true blues fan...Think of Bonnie Raitt + Janis Joplin +Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Don't let the cheesy title keep you away. Peace Meal is a wonderful blues rock album in which all of the band members shine. Still it's Ms. Wonderland's voice and guitar chops that bring the songs to another level. As such a powerful force, it is only natural for her to open the album with a cover of Janis Joplin's "What Good Can Drinkin' Do". However, her own songs such as "Only God Knows When" (with great boogie piano by Cole El-Saleh) and "Usurper" are also highlights. She closes the album with a gentle, mandolin-driven tune that showcases the control and versatility of her mighty voice. Highly recommended.

This is my first exposure to Carolyn Wonderland, and I'm happy to say I am delighted (just gets better with repeated listening), and look forward to exploring more of her music.

At first I worried she would sound too much like a "Janice, or Bonnie Raitt or Susan Tedeschi", but she doesn't. She is distinct enough for a Texas blues singer/guitarist, and that's saying a lot. Her song selection is fine (half originals, and half covers), and she has a great voice - strong, expressive, but also with plenty of dynamic range. Production and backup musicianship is top-notch, and Carolyn plays a mean electric guitar.... She is firmly grounded in the blues, but her voice also reminds me at times of jazzy R&B - old (Etta James crossed with Aretha) and new (Joss Stone). Her overall sound with its wide range of styles also reminds me of bands far outside the blues mainstream (such as The Radiators and Little Feat).

This is really good stuff - not revolutionary, but not tired and predictable either.

I didn't know anything about this artist. Then I saw it tagged with another cd on Amazon. I listened to the samples and decided to take a chance. The first time through I thought this is ok. Every time I've listened to it since, it gets better and better. This is an excellent cd. Outstanding.

i was at a guitar show in new jersey yesterday and in addition to all the instruments a few vendors were selling records and cd's
one guy had a big amount of cd's that were 3 for 5.00

i first saw carolyn a couple years ago on austin city limits and then had the great fortune to catch her live in nyc that summer
when i try to describe her to people i just say the voice of janis with the guitar playing of stevie ray
for the record the 3 cd's i purchased were this, renaissance king biscuit flower hour volume 1, and little feat live waiting for columbus!
