Peace, Love & Misunderstanding is a showcase of top-flight acting talent, especially Jane Fonda, who looks like she's having a ball playing Grace, an aging flower child who sees no reason to drop back in to society. Catherine Keener plays Grace's conservative, divorced daughter--and it's actually quite remarkable how alike the actors look and comport themselves. Keener's Diane is watching her perfectly constructed life come undone by an unexpected divorce, so she takes her family up to Woodstock, New York, to visit dear old flaky Mom, whom she hasn't seen in years. It's safe to say that every generation learns, if reluctantly, from the other, and despite the script's many clichés, the fine acting does give Peace, Love & Misunderstanding its moments. Other standouts in the cast include rising star Elizabeth Olsen, as Diane's earnest vegan daughter, Zoe, and Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl), as a hunky young local butcher trying to win Zoe's heart. Grace, meanwhile, dominates the action, with her aging-hippie hobbies and pearls of wisdom, and the soundtrack obliges with requisite tunes from the '60s and '70s. One may remember a similar Jane Fonda film, with its own twist of nostalgia for an earlier time, Coming Home, which used the music of the '60s much more evocatively--or maybe it just was lucky to be able to use it first. But if the messages in Peace, Love & Misunderstanding feel featherweight--like Family Ties flashed-forward a few decades--director Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy) still lets his talented actors, especially Fonda, Keener, and Olsen, shine. And that definitely feels groovy. --A.T. Hurley

Product Description

When her husband tells her he wants a divorce, devastated Manhattan lawyer Diane (Catherine Keener, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Being John Malkovich) heads upstate with her two teens to Woodstock to stay with her estranged flower-child mother (Jane Fonda). In this charming village, Diane and her city kids get a new perspective on life: poetry-reading daughter Zoe (breakout star Elizabeth Olsen of Martha Marcy May Marlene) becomes interested in a sensitive young butcher Chace Crawford, (Gossip Girl), nerdy son Jake (Nat Wolff, The Naked Brothers Band) finds material for his first film project, and Diane herself grows close to a handsome carpenter/singer (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Magic City). Most importantly, Diane finally gets the chance to end the ancient war with the mother she has not seen for decades. Legendary director Bruce Beresford (Tender Mercies, Driving Miss Daisy) creates a touching and poignant comedy with PEACE, LOVE & MISUNDERSTANDING, which proves once and for all that having an old soul doesn't mean you can't be a free spirit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Movie August 13, 2012
Format:Amazon Instant Video
I NEVER write reviews; however; after watching this film I felt it absolutely necessarily to do so. "Peace, Love & Misunderstanding" is now in my top three favorite movies. The characters are well-developed and brilliantly acted. Jane Fonda shines--as always. Elizabeth Olsen is a powerhouse in the making--and Jeffery Dean Morgan is just an absolute pleasure to watch. The film chronicles the difficulties of bridging gaps between generations, and social beliefs systems. The true lesson is how to let go of the past in order to start the future...just a beautiful movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable film August 11, 2012
Format:Amazon Instant Video
Thoroughly enjoyable film, which is no surprise considering the cast. Great characters, beautiful locations, and a totally uplifting story. I thought all three leading female roles (Fonda, Keener, and Olsen) played their parts beautifully. Have never seen Nat Wolff (Jake) in anything before and found his character to bring much color and humor to the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really, really like this movie! June 23, 2012
Format:DVD
Perhaps I am a little bias, but I think this is a really great movie. The characters are funny, interesting, and entertaining. The views of the land and the wildlife are terrific! A good portion of Peace, Love & Misunderstanding was filmed next door to where I live. It has captured all the beauty of the land. I feel lucky to have been able to observe a lot of this movie in the making (including "howling at the moon") and to see Jane Fonda in person. It has given me many wonderful memories!
