Book Description

Peace with North Korea--Opportunity Squandered: Opportunity Recyclable?

On July 5, 2006, North Korea tested a number of missiles. On October 9, 2006, North Korea apparently tested a nuclear device. To the citizen of the West, these actions are nearly incomprehensible given what North Korea will face in retribution. However, to the North Koreans, these actions culminate a long and critical process of developing a deterrent against a nuclear attack by the United States, and are worth the cost. How did we get here? How do we get out of here? Will we now choose to do the right thing? These questions, which may prove to be critical to the survival of our society, are explored within these pages.

Hail, Citizens, and well met. Gather, and a great tale will be told. Several will tell the tale, that it may be told true. For a tale, like a brilliant jewel, has many facets, each different from its neighbor, yet contributing a unique essence to the whole. The tale will be told by the Storyteller, who speaks in fable. The tale will be told by the Scholar, who speaks in facts and theories and rationale. The tale will be told by the Trickster, who speaks in earnest, if not complete truth. Taken together, the tale will bloom from the pieces to become the whole. The tale will enchant you. The tale will displease you. Take solace, therefore, that the ending be not written. You may write it, as it pleases you. Our tale is the tale of two brothers.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

I am the Trickster, although I go by many names. I carry a great burden, most of which I consider to be misguided and unfair. I decided some time ago, maybe a long time in human years, short in mine, that I would show how I'm able to make things better for the human inhabitants of this world, and demonstrate that maybe I'm not such a bad creature after all. I decided I would intervene in a human war, unusual for me, and bring it to a swift and satisfactory conclusion. How did I do? See for yourself...

From the Back Cover

Unis sat on the shore and stared out to sea for a long time. He thought about the fact that Uncle Wongsi was a problem with no solution. What did he want, anyway? Employer Unis didn't really understand anyone that didn't want a job and wasn't willing to behave in an appropriately subservient manner in order to attain one. Unis thought about Hankuk and Jungu: Where they used to be properly subservient, they had grown in independence to the point that they no longer unquestioningly followed Unis's lead. He thought about Russie: Now much more accommodating--but in reality this wasn't very useful, because he had little influence on the family anyway. Finally, he thought about Choson. Why didn't Choson understand that if he would simply give up building the huge bomb and fade into obscurity, everything would be better?

5.0 out of 5 stars Peace accomplished, February 16, 2007
This review is from: Peace with North Korea: Opportunity Squandered: What Next? (Paperback)
Peace with North Korea is a complete, step by step account, outlining various types of mediation techniques. It uses Korea as the main illustration of these techniques, demonstrating how the Clinton administration had used these techniques to slowly move Korea on the path toward normalization and away from danger to the world. Last week, under pressure from its constant worldwide failures, the Bush administration took the advice of Dr. Cuthbert and finally put us back in the position where we were in 2000 before our country came under the dictatorship of those who do not believe in mediation nor negotiation. It is as though the six nations had all read this book. A must read for all who care about Peace.
