Big Country is a band that could never be duplicated. That Scottish sound, that sense of pride, the sting of emotional pain. This is a band that can visit so many different areas in one album. <Peace in Our Time> visits all those places. I consider this CD to be a more mature version of Big Country. More layers of background vocals, outstanding drumming continues, great guitar work (with that scottish bagpipe sound), the powerful lyrics (check out "Thousand Yard Stare"). <Peace In Our Time> is wonderful. Fresh, tight, flowing. If you like "The Crossing, "Steeltown", and "The Seer", then you'll love "Peace In our Time". Buy it, jump in the car, put down the top, and just drive. You'll understand.

When I saw the band after a couple of years, I had just seen them on MTV playing King Of Emotion, and I thought that they were back with a "full on" album as I heard first time in "The Crossing" and "The Seer", but after listening to this album, I thought maybe not, it didn't have their catchy tunes as their earlier albums. After I had listened to it, a couple of more times the songs started to grow on me and I really had to admit, I started to really enjoy it. It's not what I expected from the band, but I do recomend it to all Big Country fans as a place on their CD racks as it shows how diversified they have become.

A producer can make or break a project with an established band. Listening to the demos and the track that Chris Thomas produced for Big Country when they were attempting their first album one can hear WHY Steve Lilywhite their producer was so important to establishing the band's sound and helping them capture on tape what sounded so vital live. Lilywhite brilliantly capture their sound on The Crossing and Steel Town (and underrated gem from their discography).

Peter Wolf's (not the singer from J. Geils but a former keyboard player with Frank Zappa. Wolf is best known for producing the Starship's "We Built This City")production is too slick robbing the music of much of its power and making it sound more generic. An example of what's wrong with his approach is that during one song Wolf sample Stuart Adamson's guitar string by string and, rathr let one of the two terrific guitar players in the band play a solo, Wolf played it from his samples on keyboard (this from the notes in the booklet). With players and material this good, it's a pity that no one thought to trust the band.

As a result, I gave the original album three stars. The bonus tracks/disc bump it up to four.

The 2 CD deluxe edition doesn't exactly remedy the situation but it does make this album essential for the disc and a half of singles, b-sides and demos that have been packed on this edition. Unfortunately, there's only 1 previously unreleased track ("Cuts Like A Spoon")here as the bulk of these have appeared on EP's, rarities CDs, singles, etc. but some are making their debut in digital for the first time. The good news for fans that might have missed some of these tracks on various other releases is that they are gathered here in one place with a pretty good mastering job.

It took me years to realize what an important and beautiful album this is. I've always wanted to hear the single an except material from this album more than any other. And even though this is a period collection (more or less) this two disc collection is, in my opinion, better than MOST of the rarities volumes. This is a must have for any diehard fan or for anyone who is into what this band has to offer. But for a first-timer who is not familiar with their early work I would suggest holding off on this one for now, because it just might spoil you. Seriously, I've been a life long Big Country fan and I am literally not waving but drowning myself in this great two disc set.

it says the track "cuts like a spoon" is previously unreleased.it is actually the same song as "wolfman and the clown" from rarities 6.however,the version of "made in heaven" is a longer version than the one on the first rarities cd.
