Soothing, Addictive, Hypnotic... Ahhhh,
By NewMoonDaughter (Missouri) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Peace Time (Audio CD)
I think this is one of the most calming, hypnotic, and addictive works I've ever heard. It's a one-hour long track, soothing, a musical journey, a meditation, but never boring. It one long track but sounds like it's several tracks that blend seamlessly into each other with deceptive subtlety. I didn't know exactly where the changes happened, but suddenly I'd be aware the music had made a subtle shift to a distinctly different mood. I kept playing this one over, and over, and over... just kept hitting that repeat button... for days. I was hopelessly mesmerized, and couldn't seem to get enough. A masterpiece.
But a WARNING: this piece is not anything like DeJohnette's usual jazz works, so previous fans will likely be disappointed. This is really better suited for the new-agey, meditative, ambient crowd.

Thanks Jack!,

The CD is very 'peaceful', like a beautiful tone poem of melody & ambiance; calming & healing are other words that come to mind. The message is in the music- peace. A much needed work of music- thanks Jack. JB

A totally relaxing and enjoyable CD. One of the best jazz soundscape CDs I've heard. Guaranteed to melt away a stressful day.

Dejohnette's 2nd visit to ambient worlds,
By Phasedin (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Peace Time (Audio CD)
I have been listening to Dejohnette's works since the mid 1970's, so I know him to be a bit of a musical adventurer. But it even surprised me when he made this and the earlier album "Om". I think "Peace Time" has more sonic layers (as well as atmosphere) than the previous CD "Om", so it seems Jack may be excited about exploring a new area for him and discovering new possibilities and potential in the area of ambient style music.
I still enjoy the previous CD "Om" as well, but that one sounded as if it were recorded live in one go and there just wasn't as much depth to the sound field as we have here (and the samples used did tend to sound like they came from a much earlier synthesizer, perhaps one from the 1980's). Although "Peace Time" is very similar musically and in terms of direction (Dejohnette pretty much solos on keyboard over a chordal drone), there's also the sound of a sampled looped talking drum here as well. I hope Jack continues to give us more discs like this, and I would love to see him not restrict himself to a single hour-long track in the future. Now I have no problem listening to this for an hour, but a CD of different tracks of this type (maybe 3 or 4 tracks of 15-20 minutes in length with slightly different but compatible moods) would be nice as well. This is certainly late-night listening for sure! This piece was just made for the very still late night hours (I have it playing now and it's about 4 in the morning..)

Prayer and Meditation Masterpiece,

This review is from: Peace Time (Audio CD)
This is great for anyone that wants to take prayer and meditation seriously. It gives you a full hour of non-stop transforming music to put you into different phases of prayer (making your request) and meditation ( listening for answers and clarity). If you start your morning or afternoon with purposeful prayer and have this as supplemental background music you are going to be able to focus and have better clarity at your business, on your job, or in your relationships. That is why this is called Peace Time because you need to have inner peace to get through your daily obstacles.

It's so refreshing to hear someone like Jack DeJohnette release an album of great ambient music. This is a perfect example of what Eno was talking about 30 + years ago when he started the ambient genre.

What an absolute surprise....one of the premier jazz drummers of all time doing a meditative CD that just goes on and on (and gets better and better!). The slow build and smooth transitions flow effortlessly and seamlessly. Really nice work! Peace brother!
