4.0 out of 5 stars Don't watch this before eating a hamburger, September 5, 2004
This review is from: Peaceable Kingdom [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Peaceable Kingdom is a powerful documentary exposing the cruelty of factory farming and suggesting a far more compassionate attitude towards the animal kingdom. This film is not for the faint of heart, for it shows graphic scenes of animals being treated with almost unbelievable disregard and cruelty. Yet it's a movie people should see, especially those who eat meat and dairy products that come from factory farms (the vast majority). As the film explains, factory farming is a system that has replaced the quaint vision of the idyllic family farm with something far more sinister. A factory farm is just what the name implies --a place that is run on the mass production model. Tragically, animals are the product and are treated as such. We see hundreds of cows standing in a penned area so overcrowded they can't move, birds getting their beaks chopped off by machines and animals so weak from malnutrition and lack of exercise that they cannot walk. This process is not only cruel, it is not healthy for humans; the animals on these farms are given large doses of antibiotics and hormones to keep them alive (if barely) and growing.

In addition to portraying the evils of factory farming, Peaceable Kingdom documents the efforts of farm sanctuary members who rescue and adopt animals that would otherwise have been slaughtered. Many of these animals, including cows, pigs and chickens, come to the farm injured and mistreated and are nursed back to health. Especially touching are interviews with people who grew up on farms, where animals were only considered food. One of these farmers explains how he and many others were forced to suppress any compassion they felt towards the animals. Also effective are scenes where people bond with these farm animals, who are clearly intelligent beings just as affectionate as dogs or cats.

Peaceable Kingdom is both depressing and uplifting. It shows that the animal rights movement is facing an uphill battle, but that it is gaining momentum all the same. People who want to contribute to this cause should consider adopting an animal from one of these sanctuaries. You might also consider giving up animal products, or at least obtaining them from places (such as smaller organic farms) where animals are well treated.

This is an extremely powerful and moving documentary. It opens the viewer's eyes to the horrifying truth about what is going on with the meat industry and how much information is hidden from the public. It is so important for people to see this film and share it with their family members, friends etc. Please watch this movie. It is very effective for an awareness that is desperately needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary documentary- A profound eye-opener, November 29, 2004
This review is from: Peaceable Kingdom [VHS] (VHS Tape)
It would be amazing if everyone who eats meat would watch this documentary, which shows the extraordinary cruelty that goes on in meat factories. I watched it with two friends a few weeks ago and we've all stopped eating meat since then. I now believe that it is the responsibility of anyone who chooses to eat meat to understand what is involved in bringing it to your table, and if you can still eat it with a clean conscience, that's fine, but few people would be able to continue eating meat after watching this documentary, in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peaceable Kingdom, February 28, 2006
This review is from: Peaceable Kingdom [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Peaceable Kingdom is a world class documentary. The outstandly high quality of the directing, photography, and editing draws the viewers into the emotions expressed by both the humans and the animals filmed. This opinion was amplified by the sell-out crowd who attended the premier showing at Lincoln Center in New York City.

For years, I have thought about the way societal peer pressures have been systematically hardening the hearts of our children against feeling the pain and suffering of the whole of creation, until they accept cruelty and suffering as a way of life for all but those in their own sphere of compassion. Through the eyes and words of several people and animals who have lived both sides of this issue, Peaceable Kingdom exposes this underlying cruelty in our society, and directs us back to compassionate living.

The jacket description aptly describes Peaceable Kingdom:

At a time when the public is more concerned than ever about the health and environmental problems associated with large-scale factory farming, Peaceable Kingdom explores another angle of this unfolding story: the interconnected life journeys of farm animals, former farmers, and animal rescuers struggling against an out of control industrial system.

Breaking generations of silence in the farm community, Peaceable Kingdom weaves together themes of respect, forgiveness, commitment, and healing, offering a vision of a more peaceful world that is well within our reach.

We recommend Peaceable Kingdom to everyone. It is an outstanding resource for group viewing and should be part of every private and public library. We all need to be part of the Peaceable Kingdom.
