3.0 out of 5 stars A Very different STS9 - but not bad!
First off, STS9 seems to have embarked on a new direction with this album. Different sound, but wouldn't say it feels 80s at all. Perhaps more pessimistic or dark than their previous works. All of their previous albums had hit and miss songs and this one is the same.

One thing that frustrates me a little is that most of the tracks that I like on this album...

5.0 out of 5 stars Love It!, March 16, 2011
This review is from: Peaceblaster (Audio CD)
This is definitely my favorite studio album from STS9. Their sound is so powerful and unique with its atmospheric tones and dancing melodies that can make you want to want to jump up and boogie or just lay comfortably and groove cerebrally. With that said, this is definitely a band who is judged regularly on their live shows and out of all of the times I have seen them, they always flawlessly delivered a damn good performance. Definitely a band everyone needs to see live and the perfect opportunity is at Wakarusa 2011 this June in Ozark, Arkansas. It's going to be the best festival of the summer!!

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC, March 1, 2011
This review is from: Peaceblaster (Audio CD)
Sound Tribe's style is unmatched. And they really convey that style in this record. They jump from mellow and ambient to dancey and jammy effortlessly. While sticking to their electronic style, they include multiple electronic genres. Hints of drum and bass, dub, house, and soundscapes can be found throughout, sometimes in the same song. They do it well though. A must buy for any fan or anyone who likes electronic music. and be sure to check them out at wakarusa this summer! It's June 2-5 in Arkansas and STS9 is going to kill it!

5.0 out of 5 stars never a let down!, February 7, 2011
This review is from: Peaceblaster (Audio CD)
I have seen STS9 11 times and they never seem to fail my expectations. I could listen to their music all day and it just never gets old. Peaceblaster is a classic album and one that remains on repeat on my iPod. Definitely looking forward to their upcoming show at WAKARUSA 2011 and praying for THE David Murphy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A different direction for the band, April 14, 2010
This review is from: Peaceblaster (Audio CD)
I went through a few phases with this album. After the first few listens I thought I liked the different direction they were heading (more focused and planned out songs rather than improvised). Then I went through a phase where I was very disappointed with the release, believing that they were on a downfall of musical talent. But it wasn't till recently that I sat down and really digested the album. I realized why it took 3 long years since their last release. They put a painstaking amount of effort into this album that only pays off when really paying attention to detail.

There is a definite mood that flows from one song to the next and a nice mixture of organic instrumentation and electric. It's very coherent as a whole. Nothing stands out as unordinary or out of place.

If people are judging this album based on what they expected, I can see why it has received poor reviews. It is a direction that is not what I expected and initially I was thrown for a loop, but as I said earlier, it took a while for me to really understand this album and I'm still learning from it. If you have your mindset on who STS9 is, then I recommend opening it up to new musical ideas. If your new to the band, enjoy, but also check out Artifact, Seasons 01, and their live downloads from 1320 records.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Very different STS9 - but not bad!, January 6, 2010

First off, STS9 seems to have embarked on a new direction with this album. Different sound, but wouldn't say it feels 80s at all. Perhaps more pessimistic or dark than their previous works. All of their previous albums had hit and miss songs and this one is the same.

One thing that frustrates me a little is that most of the tracks that I like on this album start out really solid and defining - making a statement - but then the either song wimps out or statement seems to gets clouded up by too much noise and the song looses a bit of it's steam. You could say that the songs are simply winding down for a gentle landing - a lot of their previous works do this and it's nice because the songs are generally optimistic and sunny, but with this album these beats are darker and coming off of them gently just sounds kinda wimpy to me.

Noteable favorites:
* Peaceblaster `68
* Peaceblaster `08 - these first two tracks really establish that this is something different. And they're good!
* Metameme - Excellent track! listen with big speakers. Wonders off towards the end but comes back.
* Shock Doctrine - Really great until the last quarter when the song changes entirely and leaves you like - what?
* Hidden Hand, Hidden Fist - Starts out fabulously wicked but then the track gets lost somewhat towards the middle.

One of these days I really want to see STS9 live as I've heard their live shows are much better than their albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars cinematic and cool, December 8, 2009
This review is from: Peaceblaster (Audio CD)
As someone who loves Boards of Canada, and has always enjoyed STS9 in a live setting, I think this album is cinematic and very cool. It seems like there was a bit of a backlash after this disc, people saying the band lost it after Artifact and I really don't get that. Any other band puts Peaceblaster out and the hipsters would've been knocking each other over to slather gravy on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars music, April 22, 2009

this album is really somber and melancholy and introspective, not sunny day driving music but everyday isn't a sunny day

This is a great CD. Pretty much every song goes exactly where my ears want them to go. The entire album feels like a journey, with each song rising and falling.
