5.0 out of 5 stars Made me a better mother!
When I received my copy of the book from Amazon.com, I began applying Naomi Drew's principles to my 3 1/2 year old daughter. She had been having tantrums and talking back. After only two days of following the advice of this book, my daughter's behavior began to change. She actually started using "I messages" and stating her own feelings. 2.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't plough through the Zen-like fluff...
An avid reader, I couldn't manage to plough through the "peaceful household" Zen-like initial portion of the book. Accordingly, I abandoned the book mid-read...an almost unheard of phenomenon for me.

I was hoping, not for advice on deep breathing exercises, but for tangible parenting advice that I could readily employ. And please stop summarizing for me...

After only two days of following the advice of this book, my daughter's behavior began to change. She actually started using "I messages" and stating her own feelings. My house is more peaceful and I have become more consistent and happy with my children. Excellent, excellent, excellent book for all moms who want to have a more peaceful home!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great parenting and counseling tool, April 16, 2001

I am an elementary counselor and have found this book to be filled with many helpful suggestions and ideas. I have recommended it to all my parents. There is a short summary at the end of each chapter for those who don't have a lot of time to read it through completely. The bibiliography at the end of each chapter has great resouces for both parent and child with web sites. It covers discipline, listening skills, conflict resolution, family meetings, anger management and much, much more. It is easy to read and has many real-life examples. It is clear, concise, useful and practical. Thank you Naomi for creating such a wonderful tool!

4.0 out of 5 stars User Manual for Interacting with Your Child, March 12, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Peaceful Parents, Peaceful Kids: Practical Ways to Create a Calm and Happy Home (Paperback)
This book hits the target in so may ways. It is gracefully written, well-organized, and, sometimes, even entertaining. Compared to most self-help books it is also economically written, not padded with lots of redundant illustrative examples involving "real people". Most importantly, its advice is reasonable, persuasive, and clearly described. I found a pointer like "STOP, BREATHE, CHILL" before you dive headlong into a no-win verbal scrum with your child immensely helpful. One of the book's overriding themes is that by following its program "you will gain the freedom to CHOOSE your actions rather than simply REACT." I can't think of a more useful parental objective and the book really helps your chances of achieving it. My only quibble with the book is that sometimes the methods it advises are just too cumbersome for everyday type problems--that it wants you to resolve a little sibling dispute with the equivalent of a U.N. resolution. But if you want an effective handbook for heading off serious problems and improving the overall atmosphere of your family environment, then buy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Peace is at hand!, December 20, 2000

This review is from: Peaceful Parents, Peaceful Kids: Practical Ways to Create a Calm and Happy Home (Paperback)
If you are trying to cope with the demands of work, taking care of your home and countless other obligations and responsibilities while ensuring the healthy development and well-being of your children, the sooner you read this book, the better! Naomi Drew's book provides practical and realistic approaches to everyday challenges faced by parents in relating to their children. Real-life situations are presented. You will undoubtedly say to yourself, "I know that scenario. I've been in it and this is what I can do to handle it more effectively and peacefully next time". The book also provides a wonderful context for peaceful parenting. Ms. Drew discusses the impact of raising caring and compassionate children who have learned peaceful approaches to problem solving not only to peace in our homes, but in our communities, our country and our world. Peace is a goal we all need to embrace. This book clearly demonstrates that achieving peace in the world can truly begin at home.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Helped Me, November 14, 2000
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Peaceful Parents, Peaceful Kids: Practical Ways to Create a Calm and Happy Home (Paperback)
After my mom read Peaceful Parents, Peaceful Kids she made copies of the "Peaceful Kids Action Plan" for me. I hung each page in my room like the book said, and every day I followed the Peaceful Kids Action Steps. It's really helping me get along better with my family, even my little brother. I think more parents should get this book and use it with their kids. It really works. Plus my mom doesn't yell as much now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Peace at every doorstep!, November 26, 2001
This review is from: Peaceful Parents, Peaceful Kids: Practical Ways to Create a Calm and Happy Home (Paperback)
Peaceful Parents, Peaceful Kids is one of the "number of points" self-help books that are so popular these days. The opening message that peace in the family begins with peace in the parent clearly moves us in the right direction.Author Naomi Drew has already had a hit along the lines with Learning the Skills of Peacemaking, also aiming Public schools. We can't just place the blame on television, school, other kids, or lack of time, not if we want to actually address the problem. Drew's some of her imagined resolutions are a little too elaborate, she uses concrete, realistic examples. It's important to aim high when you're planning a successful family. Even if you only manage half the book's aims, you'll be much better off. The author breaks the big job of bringing peace to the family down to seventeen points. Parental actions should be guided by love, compassion, fairness, respect, and integrity and nurture these attributes in children. Indeed! Peace is at every doorstep!

This book is an aboslute gem! It's loaded with practical ideas to help raise more peaceful kids and it's exactly the book every parent needs to keep by their nightstand. I'm already seeing the results on my kids. This one I strongly recommend!!!
