3.0 out of 5 stars Only for fans of really weird movies, June 2, 2007
This review is from: Peacock King (DVD)
Yuen Biao stars as a young Tibetan priest who knows all sorts of magic and has to battle demons when the holes of Hell open up. There is a young girl who has been chosen to be the Hell Virgin and she is causing all sorts of destruction. I can't say too much about the story because you don't find out what is going on until about 25 minutes left. I was about to turn the movie off because it doesn't make any sense, but they finally explain things and the movie picks up quite a bit in the last 25 minutes.

The action is mainly monster surprise attacks, but with 20 minutes left in the movie Yuen Biao takes on Gordon Liu and all of his men in a great fight. Biao gets to show off his awesome kicking skills and you really have to wonder why he didn't get to display his kicks more in movies. Some of the special effects are crude but most of it is fun to watch. There is a witch that can turn into a really scary monster, and some of the explosions are spectacular.

While the movie drags along for the first 40 minutes and seems really pointless, it gets pretty crazy when the 4th hole of Hell opens up. The story that is presented is far too complex for 80 minutes, but it is still tons of fun. This movie was crazy enough for me to want to see Saga of the Phoenix which looks like the sequel.

2.5/5

The DVD from Universe Laser and Video Company has good picture and sound quality. The subtitles are not bad.
