3.0 out of 5 stars A good start for education on peanut allergy
We found out the hard way that our son is allergic to peanuts. After the reaction and the blood test confirming the allergy, the allergist referred us to the food allergy network website and I bought this book.

It's a pretty short book, and gives some basic information on allergies. I was still left with some questions, though--I didn't feel it was thorough...

This review is from: The Peanut Allergy Answer Book (Paperback)
This book is for those affected in some way or another by the peanut allergy, as well as for those who just want to "know what all the fuss is about". A definite must-read! If you, your child, or someone close to you has just been diagnosed with a peanut allergy and you want to know more, but don't know where to start...here's your answer. If your wondering why your child is no longer allowed to take peanut butter treats to school...this book will open your eyes to the world "the other mother" lives in.

The book is an easy read. The format is very reader-friendly and the vast array of information is presented in easily understood ways. With this book you can not only learn how and why a food allergy happens, but also how to prevent and treat possible reactions. You'll learn what it is in the peanut that is responsible for causing peanut allergies. You'll even learn some interesting facts on the peanut's product history, both as a delicious and useful (in many ways) product, and it's history in medicene, as a potentially deadly poison to those who are allergic to it.

I think the best thing about this book is that it covers more areas than the ones listed above. While those are all very important to cover, you can generally find that kind of information elsewhere. What you generally can't find are books discussing the emotional and pyschological aspects of a peanut allergy. Things like what to do if your child is being threatened with a peanut-butter and jelly sandwhich at school. And what about eating out and flying? How do you handle those with a peanut allergy? What are the latest developments in the research field? Is there any hope for a cure? All of THESE questions are answered as well.

This is an absolutely wonderful book, and I want to personally thank the author, Dr. Michael Young, for his efforts in getting this kind of information out. Not only to those of us in the peanut allergic community, but to the general public, as well. The need for a book such as this has been great for a long time. I, for one, am grateful that it's been filled!

It is my hope that this book will not only help many, many others who are dealing with the peanut allergy, but will also help to educate the general public and let them take a peek into our world. In doing so, maybe some of the preconceived notions that we, as mothers of severely peanut allergic children (mine is a delightful 2yo little boy), are "overprotective, hysterical, and paranoid", can be changed, taking at least a little of the stress involved with managing a peanut allergy off our shoulders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative, January 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Peanut Allergy Answer Book (Paperback)
There is a lot of helpful information in this book, especially about foods that contain peanut products when you would not expect it and about the treatment of allergic reactions. I am about 40, and have been severely allergic to peanuts my whole life. I had to learn much of this information through some very unpleasant allergic reactions. If you have a child with a peanut allergy or have the allergy yourself, I would highly recommend this book as a way of avoiding some of those unpleasant (and sometimes life-threatening) experiences, and as a way of understanding how the allergy works.

4.0 out of 5 stars PeanutAllergy.Com gives this book a "must read" rating!, January 13, 2002

.

This book is a must read for anyone dealing with peanut allergy.

The book is full of useful information on many topics and issues including "staying safe" and the seriousness of this potentially life threatening food allergy.

There is lots of medical information including diagnosis through skin and blood testing, possible symptoms and reactions, treatments (including information on life saving epinephrine medication), and even encouraging research on the road towards a cure.

Dr. Young also writes about many of the issues those with peanut allergy face such as finding hidden dangers, labeling, emotional and social issues, laws, medical awareness bracelets, schools, airlines, restaurants, breast feeding and pregnancy, and much more.

There is even a glossary of terms near the back of the book.

Your investment in this educational tool will be money well spent and you may even find your able to educate those in your life who are not taking the allergy seriously enough.

Stay Safe,

....

This review is from: The Peanut Allergy Answer Book (Paperback)
This is a great book for parents of an allergic child to read. The reason that I say this is because it is easy reading and is FULL of great information. It seem to answer all the question you thought of or forgot to ask... it is also great to have grandparents or caregivers read this book so it is easier for them to understand peanut and food allergy in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative, June 7, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Peanut Allergy Answer Book (Paperback)
I highly reccomend this book to any parent who has a child with peanut allergies. It is an extremely informative book. Dr. Young does not use medical terms that are hard for the layperson to understand. He also provides other resources which are invaluable. I liked the way he gave situations and how they were either resolved or should have been resolved. He anwered all you could/would ever want to know about peanut allergies.
Dr. Young has been treating my son for his peanut allergies (as well as other allergies) for the past few years, so i personally know how well informed this Dr. is.
Thank you, Dr. Young!

As a parent of a newly diagnosed peanut allergic 4 yr-old, this is just what I needed to read. Dr. Young covers clearly and comprehensively all the aspects of peanut (and other food) allergy. There is so much information currently available on the subject of peanut allergy but this is the only up-to-date book that brings it all together. I recommend this to anyone concerned by - or interested in learning more about - food allergies.

I just found out that my grandson is allergic to peanuts. This book was FULL of great information- although a little scary. It's fairly short and very easy to understand. Written for the non-medical person.

Got this book on reccomendation from my Childs Allergist. It is a very informative and easy to understand book. My son was diagnosed with a peanut allergy at 12 months just from my aunt kissing him after eating peanuts so we were shocked at the reaction to peanuts he has. This really helped us to understand and relax somewhat.

5.0 out of 5 stars More informed after reading this book, May 23, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
When my son was diagnosed with a severe peanut allergy at the age of 18 months, I left the doctor's office feeling very uninformed and unprepared. After searching my options, I chose this book on peanut allergies to give me some answers, and the book is great! Questions about treatments for exposure, what to watch out for in food labels, and how to handle travel/restaurant situations were all great! The book was easy to read, and you can select specific chapters to get the facts you want to know without reading the book from beginning to end right away. My son is now five years old and is doing just great! Most of our safety routines have been developed after reading this book. I highly recommend this book for parents of PA children and as a gift for your child's teacher or school nurse.
