From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4This clever book celebrates the world of this perennial favorite food with recipes, edible arts and crafts, riddles, games, and even a one-act play. On the right side of each double-page spread, Charlip offers a multitude of things to do with plain (or chunky) peanut butter, such as having a Ghost Toast Party or creating a Peanut Butter Under Glass sculpture. Meals On Wheels and Camouflage Surprise Party offer creative ways to dress up other foods with the spread. Monsters You Can Eat gives a recipe for edible play dough. On the pages opposite these activities, small black-and-white illustrations show different groups of youngsters sitting at a table and rhapsodizing about the tasty treat. Their conversations include such priceless tidbits as After 11 years of peanut butter I thought Id lose my taste for it, but Im glad its still in my life. Charlips watercolor illustrations glorify the sticky stuff on every page. The artist spreads color everywhereeven transforming normally black outlines into brightly colored linear rainbows. Soft pastel shades fill the backgrounds, changing hues with every turn of the page. Like its subject, this unique book should have universal appeal.Lisa Gangemi Krapp, formerly at Sousa Elementary School, Port Washington, NY
