Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In this story about imaginative play, Peanut has a new blue ball. It’s a great ball, and her older sister, Fifi, wants it. But no matter what Fifi suggests they do with it, Peanut refuses. Then Fifi brings an imaginary seal into the equation, along with clothes and pajamas, so that all four can travel the world. Peanut acquiesces, but Fifi doesn’t need the ball anymore to play. End of story? Well, not quite. Much of this book’s charm lies in the spare illustrations of the girls, rendered as broad black strokes in geometric shapes (Fifi is triangular; Peanut is more rounded), and accented by a blue, green, and peach color palette. The backgrounds are plain and the pages creamy, which allow the characters to pop—up until the lovely, fully saturated final spread. When Fifi introduces each imaginary object, it’s effectively rendered in muted colors and bordered with a dotted line. Share with kids who understand what it’s like to have a special toy, a sibling, and a powerful imagination. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Ann Kelley

A wonderful story of learning to use your imagination and sharing. Everyone knows the difficulties of having to share a new toy with a sibling. Working together, being creative and learning to laugh is the key to it all. The author knows exactly how to balance the dynamics of children at their best. A great read aloud!

Format: Hardcover
With spare and charming illustrations and lyrical text, Peanut and Fifi Have a Ball captures the touching and sometimes touchy dynamics between BIG and little siblings when they play together. After much creative and strategic horse-trading by the older sister, in the end, it's the little one who blasts them both off into playdate heaven! This little book could spark some big conversations before, during or after inevitable sibling conflicts.

As with all Randall de Seve's books, this one is full of wonderful characters, warmth, and humor. Kids will immediately recognize the situation these sisters are in, and it leads into lots of "remember when" conversations. Peanut and Fifi has great appealing illustrations, too - bold images, clever shapes and fun colors. My son says, "It's a good book. Read it!"
