Great product with one flaw...,

I bought this as a mother's day gift for use with my 8 month old. The 'clay' was soft (like Play-dough) & easy to roll out, which was great considering it took 5 tries to get a decent hand print thanks to a squirming child. Be sure your child's hand is clean otherwise it will leave little bits of whatever in the mold.
The major problem I had with this was the piece of plastic you're supposed to use as a cutting ring. It is a single strand of plastic with adhesive on one end so you can make the size right for you, however it comes folded up in the package. when you try to make it into a circle, it's impossible to have rounded edges and therefore you end up with an odd shape. On the one hand, it's kind of cute this was as it looks more like a child's craft but on the other, it's not going to produce a perfect circle. The instructions are easy to follow but read them all the way through before starting (I almost forgot to punch a hole with the enclosed straw to string the ribbon through). It comes with white, blue and pink ribbon, so you can customize it for your child. After two days in the closet, it hardened perfectly and was a great gift for Mom!

Aggravating in so many ways,
By Thatchickdives (TX) - See all my reviews

I bought/was gifted several different products for making my child's hand prints and this was by far the worst. It is aggravating in so many ways:
1. The material is sticky and is difficult to get out of the foil pouch; you'll leave some behind. 2. The material is then impossible to roll out with the rolling pin provided since it sticks to the pin unless you forcefully roll it over the product in one direction only. Don't try and roll back and forth ON the dough. 3. Once we got the imprints they weren't very detailed at all. The material is so soft you will either press the hand through it and create holes or not press hard enough so that you can barely make out the hand at all. 4. The ring would not come off the material. 5. The hole punch sticks to the material and makes a mess instead of creating a hole. Don't buy this one. We had two people, one distracted one-year old and it still wouldn't work well. From our selection of products, the Casting Keepsakes Clay hanging Keepsake Kit worked the best. It was smooth, non-sticky and create detailed imprints.

Easy Baby Print Ornament Kit!,

This review is from: Pearhead Baby Hanging Keepsake, Holiday (Baby Product)
I purchased this so we could have our daughter's handprint for her very first Christmas. It is INCREDIBLY easy to do! The best part is that if you make a mistake or you are not happy with how the print came out you can redo it. I am not sure what this is made of, but it smells like marshmallows. It is smooth and soft and you roll it out using the roller included with the kit. I should mention that the material stuck to the wooden roller that came with the kit and the directions state that if this happens, to use a round tin can. That worked for me! The other thing I had trouble with was the plastic ring that came with the kit; I just used a bowl.
You do have to push a bit hard to make a solid impression in the material. A straw is included to make the holes at the top for the ribbon. I used a toothpick and pin-pricked the year at the bottom. It came out beautiful! I highly recommend this kit for parents and to make those one-of-a-kind keepsake gifts.

Too Spongy,
By Candice L. (Sarasota, FL) - See all my reviews

We did eventually get a usable print out of this kit, but the material is spongy. You press the hand into it and then it springs back somewhat - like memory foam. It also does not dry hard (which I didn't realize at the time of purchase). I always remains somewhat flexible and my 3 yr old was able to tear a dried leftover piece in half with his bear hands.

Easy to do... but final product is soft,

We had a great time making the imprints for our twins' hands and feet. It was very quick and there was no mess to clean up afterwards. Also, there was enough foam in a kit to do both a hand and a foot. However, the final product is very lightweight and rather soft. I would also recommend using something to cut it out other than the included ring because we had a hard time getting the ring to look even.

Handprint keepsake, no mess,
This review is from: Pearhead Baby Hanging Keepsake, Standard (Baby Product)
I was able to make this ornament for my son's first Christmas. The mold was easy to make and didn't take too much time. Plus there was no mess. I agree it was a little difficult to press the baby's hand - but not having a big mess to clean up was a big plus. It may be easier to do with a hand as opposed to a footprint. Plus I had enough room to personalize it by writing the date and his name. A great personalized gift for parents or grandparents that is easy and quick.

Way too soft,

First of all, do not think you'll be able to get a baby's handprint. Most babies keep their hand balled up and will refuse to open it. Even when I forced her hand open, she proceeded to grab a chunk of the clay upon pulling her hand back off. Got an okay footprint. But even after the full drying process, the product is very soft and can be scratched easily with a fingernail. I don't see how this would last a long time as a keepsake or ornament unless you treat it very delicately. Not what I was looking for. I thought it would be more solid when finished.

Did not work as I had hoped!,

I had visions of making cute baby print ornaments for christmas. However, I quickly realized that wasn't going to happen as I tried to roll out the putty with the enclosed rolling pin. It stuck to the rolling pin so I followed the instructions that said if sticky, roll with an aerosol can. Ok did that - then proceeded to stick my baby's hand into the putty - and all the putty got stuck to her hand. After 3 failed attempts the whole thing ended up in the trash. I followed the directions so I'm not sure what went wrong but I wouldn't recommend this product.

I ordered both the tin kit and the hanging kit, and they were great! The material was just what I wanted. Having read all the reviews before buying, I decided not to even try the rest of the kit. I ended up taking someone's advice: using wax paper and a round glass to roll it out, and using other methods to shape it. I ended up using a combination of my hands and a butter knife to finish it, but I hear a bowl works well too. The wax paper and glass worked fine with it! I was left with a couple of nice, detailed impressions, and no mess on my baby's hands. The material was light enough to ship to my mother-in-law! Since it's so light, it will be a little softer than other products when it's done. It's meant to hang somewhere or be stored in a tin, so I suggest keeping the finished product away from marauding babies until they're old enough to know better than to break it. Make sure baby's hands and feet are clean before using. My baby was 7 months when I did it, and he was difficult to work with, but it wasn't the product's fault. We're talking about babies here. Not the most cooperative bunch! Another suggestion: make sure you have plenty of time to do it after opening the package, and that you and/or your partner (and the baby!)are in a good mood, because working with a squirming baby can be a trying experience. Be prepared to do it over several times before you get a print you like, because it takes a little practice. With a little patience and creativity, I'm confident you can get the prints you want! Lighten up and have fun!

Great idea, directions not helpful,

We bought two of these to use for our newborn and were very excited to give it a try. However, the directions provided in the package lead to a frustrating experience. The dough sticks to everything, including tin foil and the rolling pin. The cutting device is not a round circle (as mentioned in other reviews) and the straw to poke a hole in the top does not remove enough dough to run a ribbon through. Our recs: Use wax paper on top and bottom of the dough instead of tin foil, use a smooth kitchen glass to roll out dough, form by hand into a circle and don't plan to cut the dough once imprint is made, and use toothpick to make hole for ribbon. Our masterpiece is currently drying, will have to wait to see how hard it is in a few days ...
