Real Scottish gems from Aly and Phil ....,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Pearl (Audio CD)
The slow tunes of Phil Cunningham are poignant and delightful on this recording. "Quendale Bay", "Belle Mere's Waltz" and "The Pearl" are breathtakingly beautiful and linger in the memory for ages. Aly's playing on the slow tunes is exquisite - a light sensitive touch and Phil's accompaniment superb. The faster tunes are also first class and overall this is one of the most relaxing instrumental albums in my considerable collection. If you like it, and you should, then "The Ruby" by the same pair and Aly's solo "Lonely Bird" are just as good.

Having long been a fan of Silly Wizard and Boys of the Lough, you may imagine how delighted I was to have an opportunity to see Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham perform recently. I purchased both of their CDs thereafter. The Pearl is notable, in my opinion, not only for good music but for a good-humored treatment of old standards. For instance, the bagpipe march "Flett from Flotto" is arranged as a schottische ... and it works quite well! Fans of Bain and Cunningham should not be without this CD.
