Excellent!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Pearl Harbor, 1941 (Mass Market Paperback)
Well, I'd actually give it 4 and a half stars, but that isn't possible. The book is about twenty year old Bekah Martin, whose fiance, David McLaughlin, died in a fire the year before. She did, however, agree to marry his twin brother, Ian McLaughlin. When she returns to Hawaii, she meets Scott DeAngelo, ensign, of the US Navy, while onboard the ship. The two have somewhat of a "shipboard romance", though she feels that she's being disloyal to Ian. He, meanwhile, thinks that she's afraid to love... which is true. Purgatory, he calls her way of life. They meet a few times after getting off to Hawaii, and Scott still persists to "capture her heart", so to speak. She still remains loyal to Ian. Ian, hoever, doesn't love her... only in a brother/sister way, as does she, so the two eventually break off the engagement. Scott proposes, but she tells him she has to think... On December 7th, she finds herself onboard the Nevada, asleep after tending to Scott's friend Jimmy. The attack on Pearl Harbor begins, and she's stuck in the middle of it. During the attack, Scott is suddenly on fire, and Bekah painfully reminices how David had also been engulfed in flames. Being a nurse, she finds several wounded, but she can't do much to help, and is brought back to the hospital. I can't tell the ending... It would ruin the story. But she sees Scott again, and isn't afraid to love him any longer, even if her worst fear is coming true: He's dying. The one thing wrong with this was that they jumped into romance a little too quickly. It would have been better had they fallen for each other later... instead of at second or third sight (in a matter of two or three meetings; two days). Still, it WAS an excellent story, and the scenes were painted quite vividly. Especially on the Nevada, when she encounters many men that were killed. The end, at the Pearl Harbor attack, was probably the most well written. If not for the romance, or the characters, read it for the end, which would give a clear and, almost, scary idea of what was happening during the attack.

A beautifully written love story.,
This review is from: Pearl Harbor, 1941 (Mass Market Paperback)
At twenty years of age, Rebekah Martin lost her beloved fiance David McLaughlin to a tragic fire. Even though she knew she did not, and would never, love him, she agreed to return and marry David's twin brother Ian once her heart had healed. And with that promise, Bekah leaves her sheltered life in the territory of Hawaii and goes to live with her aunt in San Francisco. Haunted by memories of the night David died and believing she could have done something more to save him, Bekah struggles to let go of the past. Her aunt tries to persuade her to stay, but after nearly a year on the mainland, Bekah decides it is time to return home to face Ian and fulfill her promise. It is November of 1941, and the United States is beginning to prepare for a possible entry into the second World War. On the sea voyage home, Bekah meets Scott DeAngelo, a naval ensign from New York. Although she feels an attraction to Scott, Bekah is afraid to fall in love again - she has forced herself to believe that a loveless marriage would be better than the possibility of another loss. But as war clouds loom on the horizon, Bekah begins to realize that sometimes the only thing a person can do is follow their heart, wherever it may lead them. I really enjoyed this wonderful book. Bekah was a courageous heroine who faces many losses but struggles to build a new life. I highly reccomend this book.

I think how you feel about the book depends on what kind of stories you like to read. If you enjoy historical-fiction and romance then it is a good book, if you don't enjoy that, you probably won't want to read this book. I think the author tied together the history of the war time and the love story very well. It gives the reader a look in to Bekah and Scott's lives from two different views. Not only does is it a story about their love and what they have to overcome to be together but also about how they lived their normal lives during that period of time. I enjoy both historical-fiction and romance so I found the book very good and enjoyable to read.

This book is really a great book. I have read 5 of the 6 books in the collection (Hindenburg,1937/San Francisco Earthquake, 1906/The Great Chicago Fire,1871/Washington Avalanche, 1910/ Pearl Harbor,1941) Now I can't wait to read Louisianna Hurricane, 1860. I bought both of the latest Pearl Harbor & Louisianna Hurricane & I finished Pearl Harbor in less than 24 hours... I couldn't put it down!

This was a great book. My great-grandfather fought in WWII so I was curious about the second World War even before I started reading the book. I'm not really into teen romance stories but this book had me captivated from the begining to the end. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know about this event that is always talked about in America's history. (I hope you like to read teen romance books too!)

Wow! I thought this book was awesome... It was a great love story and I could hardly put it down. The ending kinda left me hanging but it was still awesome. I think the author should write a sequal telling what the final outcome is. I suggest this book to everyone who is searching for a good romance.

This book is so great! If I could give it a million stars I would. Okay. Maybe I am going a bit overboard but this is an excellent book. In the beginning twenty year old Bekah is still recovering the death of her fiancè. He died in a fire. Because of this she left her home in Hawaii and want to SanFransico. On her way home she meets a man named Scott. She thinks Scott is a reverand so she tells him all of her secerts. They end up falling in love. Heres the catch:she is engaged to her dead fiancès brother. Eventually they end the engagement because they arent in love. Bekah who is trained as a nurse has to go to the boat where Scott is assigned one night to nurse. The next morning the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. The end does not say if Scott dies or not but I know Bekah doesnt.
