3.0 out of 5 stars I liked this movie - Too bad it's another MPEG2 encode
This movie was definitely one to show off the Blu-Ray format, but some corporate genius decided not to pay MS royalties for the use of VC-1, and they went with MPEG2 again on PH. Unless you have the sharpness dialed down on your set, or a 720p display blocking can be seen on this title pretty easily. If you're not sensitive to it then you're lucky. It comes through...

It comes through looking almost like a second layer of grain, but not the very fine grain of good film we're used to. I know some films are intentionally grainy, but rather than error diffusion (like real grain) this movie exhibits patterned grain. It is an artifact of MPEG2 block in motion.

Titles released on Blu-Ray in VC1 encoding have proven how much better they can look. Why won't they maximize the potential of the format already?

This movie is very enjoyable in plot and special effects. But, unfortunately the video transfer was poorly done in Blu-ray. If you already have standard DVD version, save your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only get this movie on blu ray, September 2, 2010

This movie should only be viewed on blu ray, full 1080P with a surround sound system. You can really feel the impacts of the bombing and gunfire on surround sound. This movie was awesome. It speaks of how the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and would bait the U.S. into WWII. But before that, a group of pilots would return the favor with their own bombing attacks on the Japanese. Seeing all those U.S. sailors running for their lives when they were being attacked is truly scary. Much respect to the men and women of the armed forces.

Pearl Harbor to me is a modern day classic. The digitally remastered Blu Ray is fantastically sharp and colors are true. Great purchase at a great value

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!, November 25, 2010
This review is from: Pearl Harbor [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
You won't see more realistic aerial scenes anywhere. Superb Technicolor cinematography, clarity and color, filming angles and special effects are awesome, feels like you are there in the midst of it. In my opinion, it isn't done any better than this.

The critics panned this movie when it came out; frankly I think that's because they're too jaded. I think it's excellent!
Yes, it's a Hollywood movie, but if you liked what Hollywood did with Titanic, you'll definitely like this one. [Oddly, Titanic got all the awards, while this one was overlooked. Can't figure it.]

The story is well rounded, showing the human side of the story in various facets, the enlisted men and women, pilots, sailors, nurses, doctors, civilians doing everyday things, US President, even the Japanese. The actors are young, but that's how it was, our service men and women were young,(still are). Service-women are shown in equal measure, in the hospitals, with real-life situations.

I've read a lot of research went into it - as much as a movie of 3 hours can. No movie about an event of this magnitude will be able to cover all events, in perfect accuracy, in a few hours. So movie critics ought to lighten up.
It's said there are still bullet holes in the cement tarmac on the real harbor, evidence of the flyover shooting of our guys on the ground, portrayed in the film. *Cuba Gooding JR's part is that of a real-life serviceman.

An excellent movie and a history lesson too. I HIGHLY recommend it.

** Weird how it came out in theaters in 2001, shortly before 9/11, which has been compared to the real Pearl Harbor ever since. This movie shows you why it goes beyond the casualty statistics.
