Product Description

Product Description

What's more packable than a rain jacket, and more protective than a windbreaker? The Pearl Izumi Elite Barrier Jacket, that's what. The anatomic, yet relaxed cut keeps it comfortable throughout the range of cycling positions, and it'll cut the wind and rain without turning into a sauna. Best of all, it packs down small enough that there's no reason to leave it at home. The Elite Barrier jacket is built of a breathable, yet weather-resistant polyester blend in order to protect you from the elements without making you suffer from any heat buildup. It transports moisture through the fabric to keep you dry, while simultaneously blocking harsh gusts of wind and rain. Additionally, the vented panels at the chest and back give the temperature regulation an added boost. When trying on the Elite jacket, you'll notice Izumi's 'Semi-Form Fit,' which basically means that the upper-torso and arms employ a relaxed, yet anatomic cut. As you get to the bottom of the sleeves and torso, the cut relaxes, and becomes similar to your favorite long sleeve t-shirt. The tall collar fights off gusts of wind, while the full-length zipper makes quick layering changes a snap. There's reflective accents to increase your visibility to motorists in low-light conditions, and since you need a spot to keep your ride essentials, there's also a pocket at the back that keeps everything accessible. The Elite Barrier Jacket is available in five sizes from Small to XX-Large and in the colors Black, Screaming Yellow, True Red, Electric Blue, and Petrol Blue/cherry tomato.

I wanted a lightweight rain jacket for summer rain, i.e., rain when the temperature was above 55 degrees F. The best rain jacket, in my opinion, is the Showers Pass eVent Elite 2.0 Jacket, but that works best for cool to cold rain. The Pearl Izumi Elite Barrier Jacket is a close second! It is highly breathable and highly water resistant jacket for warm weather inclement weather. I just got it today at the post office (where it was delivered); I put it on for the light rain (~60 deg F) that was falling. Then, on our way back, we got hit with heavy rain. We were biking in it for ~15 min before we found shelter. Once we found shelter, I felt my shirt under the jacket, and it was completely dry! Amazing! Impressive!

Oh, I'm 5' 6" tall, 38" chest, a typical mesomorph, not one of those skinny-type bike riders. I wear a medium to large in normal shirts (depending on which brand), but I chose XL for this jacket because I'm familiar with the Pearl Izumi sizing. The XL fits me nicely.

And, I got the Screaming Yellow, which is also Screaming Yellow on the back. (One of the reviewers said the back was black, but he failed to say what the front color was.) Amazon doesn't show the back.

Finally, it is light enough that it is not hot in 60 deg F rain, nor is it hot once the rain stops falling and it is just cloudy.

This is a great lightweight cycling jacket. There is no insulation, so wear it over a thermal jersey or thermal base layer in cold weather. The jacket fabric is thick enough to give you a lot of protection from wind and rain, but thin enough to stuff into your jersey pocket if the day warms up. There are even lighter weight jackets on the market, but they don't offer the same amount of weather protection. This jacket has mesh armpit vents to keep you from overheating. The black stripes in the photo show off the semi-contoured construction; those are not stretch panels or vents. The rear of the jacket is a couple of inches lower than the front to help keep your rear end dry when you are biking in the rain.

Sizing is snugger than casual jackets, but not super-snug like European pro bicycling jackets. Pearl Izumi is sold mostly to Americans who tend to be somewhat overweight. I weigh 160 pounds and size medium fits pretty well in the shoulders, but is a little loose around the torso. The waist is a little more contoured to keep cold air from seeping in from the bottom.

There is a rear pocket to hold a few lightweight items, but it is not very deep and has only a light velcro closure. I would prefer a zipper for security. I suppose the fabric is not real heavyweight, so they don't want to encourage you to stuff the pocket with heavy items.

I'm 6'3, 200lbs, and wear a 16x37 dress shirt, 36 pant and a 44 suit. Normally in bike jersey I wear a 2-3x. I bought a 2X although I would have probably been fine in an XL. The sleves are plenty long and will more than reach my gloves. The jacket fits well but is a little large around the middle - it catches more wind than I'd like. (This is strange because normally this is where things are tight on me.) It seems like it will be well suited for rain (I poured a cup of water on it and it didn't leak). It is very thin and rolls up enough to stick in my jersey back pocket.

The colors are great - the back is all black which you really couldn't see in the picture.

The best way I can describe this jacket is to say it's perfect for my commute. Since you don't ride with me, however, I'll try to explain in more detail:

My commute takes me along a waterfront (where it tends to be chilly, windy and damp in the mornings) then turns up into town. This jacket is perfect for that -- it holds heat where you need it while protecting you from the wind. The zipper is smooth and easy to grab, so you can regulate how much breeze you're letting through without having to struggle with anything. When the sun is finally up, the jacket packs down well.

My commute starts when the sun is still low in the sky. The color is great, since a few days of dawn riding caused me to graduate from "want to look cool" to "don't want to get run over by a truck". Well-positioned reflective strips play a role as well, but honestly I can't imagine someone who would see those and not the insane yellow of the jacket itself. In terms of fit, I'm 6'3", 220 lbs and the XL fits me well.

Now, what this jacket isn't: It's clearly not a rain jacket. It has vents that don't close, the seams aren't sealed or welded and the collar/cuffs don't close particularly tightly. It's not a jacket for when it's particularly cold; I think anything below 55 or so would be uncomfortable. If you're buying a jacket for either of these conditions, don't buy this one.

I ordered this jacket after reading the reviews. And I'm happy to say that I only have great things to say! If you're looking for a super-lightweight jacket to block the wind, then this a great choice. Our climate here in Las Vegas is such that the layering approach is best, and this jacket serves as my outer layer/wind & weather barrier (when needed of course). Let me say upfront that I only typically ride in weather that is 50 degrees or higher. So keep that in mind with this review. It weighs literally next to nothing, and is highly-packable should you need to take it off during a ride. I ordered the red, and am very pleased with the color. The pictures are an accurate representation of the actual color of red that the jacket is (which isn't always the case). It's bright, and makes me more visible, which was part of the reason for the choice in color. With regard to the fit, I am 5'11", and about 185, and the large fits me perfectly. I tried on a medium at the LBS and it was definitely too small. I don't generally ride in the rain, so I can't speak about it's ability to repel water. But the PI tag attached to the jacket shows a graphical representation of both water and wind repellency, and these show that it's about 80% repellent of both. If you know PI products you'll know the little bar graphs I'm referring to. If not you can probably see them if you search the product on PI's site. With regard to fit, it is loose form-fitting, just as the description indicates. At higher speeds (25+ mph), i have experienced some "flapping" in the wind, but it is very minor, to be expected with this kind of jacket, and wasn't bothersome at all. Having used it now on two rides, it does seem to virtually completely block the wind, just as advertised.Read more ›
