I live in Texas so our winters are pretty mild. Still, my toes get pretty cold when cycling in 30-40 degree weather, which is a testament to how breathable my shoes are. Well, after freezing my toes off while mountain biking the other day I went to my LBS and bought a pair of these Pro Thermal Toe covers. I've used them twice since then and have been very impressed.

1. They keep your toes warm as advertised
2. Not as hot as a whole bootie, but then again I don't live in Wisconsin
3. The Kevlar reinforced elastic at the bottom is what sold me on these over the "Elite" versions. The Kevlar stretch lining is super strong, which is helpful for when you're walking around with your cleats on cement or rocks that would otherwise tear up any other sort of material (makes me think these could last a REALLY long time even with abuse).

Buy them. You won't be disappointed. Oh. I bought the Large and I'm a size 10.5-11 (depends on shoe) and they fit perfect. Anything over an 11 might be a bit tight though.

You can only guess what the sizing means - no good sizing guides on the listing. After reading a number of reviews on what size you should get, it sounded like I should get the L/XL, which I would have assumed was too big if I didn't read the reviews. Too big! So, mine get some unnecessary airflow sneaking in, obviously not what I would buy this product for. Anyway, I wear a size 9 in a road bike shoe. Hope this helps someone else not make the same mistake.

I'm sure the correct size product would do the job well, and the quality seems good. These aren't going to just rip very easy or anything. Only reducing stars because the sizing guide doesn't give any guidance for th listing.

I bought these as a stretch of the imagination and it paid off BIG TIME!

About Me:
1. I am not a serious cyclist
2. I do not own a pair of cycling shoes that these were designed for
3. I commute 5 miles to work each day (10 mile round trip) on a Schwinn Prelude with cage pedals
4. I wear ordinary tennis shoes as I bike to work

Why I Bought These:
1. MY TOES WERE NUMB!

What I do to Compensate:
1. This product was designed to be placed on the outside of a cycling shoe... I needed something that I could wear on my way to work in 30-40 degree weather that would keep my toes from getting frostbite...
2. Instead of placing the Toe Cover on the outside of my tennis shoes, I place them over my socks and put them inside my shoes...

How it Feels:
1. When I bike to work, I don't even notice that they are on my feet... The comfort level is perfectly fine for wearing over my socks

Warmth Factor:
1. Ever since buying these Toe Covers, I get to work and my toes don't have to dethaw for 20 minutes.
2. If it gets into the 30's, my toes are still cold when I bike, but it's still 100 times better than what it used to be.

I use this product in a different way than how it was designed for and I am still very satisfied with the purchase!

A great price, looks good and is warm. I don't use my full covers very often since these are warmer than my old toe covers.

My toes always go numb when I'm riding in chilly weather. These toe covers do a great job of protecting my tootsies from the cold wind and rain, keeping them relatively toasty. I use mountain bike shoes with SPD clips, and these have good clearance for clipping in and out. Of course, they don't stay in place well if you have to hike your bike up a hill, but that's to be expected and it gives me good motivation to pedal rather than walk.

These toe covers are great! I am a huge wuss when it comes to cold weather and these saved my life. I've worn them on many occasions in temperatures as low as 40 degrees and they were great. My toes were the only part of me that was warm when I got off my bike. I have mountain bike shoes with SPDs and these toe covers fit well over them- they're a little snug getting on, but they are certainly not at risk of coming off or sliding around.

I'm really disappointed that I am giving 1 star to a Pearl Izumi product. I have their jersey, windbreaker, thermal tights, and thermal jersey. I am absolutely pleased with all the PI products I have bought over the past few months as they kept me warm and toasty while cycling and I also wore the PI thermal jersey and windbreaker while I went golfing.

I tried my best to not give this product 1 star but it really doesn't do its job. The first time I wore it I thought it had to do something with my shoe, so I taped the vents that my shoe had with duct tape. That did work to some extent but it still didn't keep my feet warm and by in the middle of my ride my feet felt like blocks of ice. I tried wearing two cotton socks and that didn't keep me warm. I then bought Smart Wool hiking socks, which were $16 a pair and that still didn't work on top of the shoe covers. Thankfully, NYC weather has been on the warm side so I haven't really experienced freezing temperatures. I think I will be buying their Elite Barrier shoe cover for next winter.

Not to mention, the stitching where the shoe goes in gave way after about 3 rides. I always take my time putting these covers on and taking them off but the stitching (white on the black one and red on the white one) gave way and I had to sew a portion of it back on.

I am very disappointed in this PI product.

These covers are completely worth the money and a must have for any one how wants to ride in the high 30's and above (I rode at 36 degrees and was very pleased).
I wear a 41 specialized comp shoe (I am 5'5") and got the Large/x-large, and am glad I did because the small/med would not have gone on my shoe. They stay in place with no problem. I really like them and personally do not feel the wind wearing thin summer socks (as no other will fit in my shoe) - my feet stay warm and have been a problem for me in the past - now I can ride in colder weather / early in the year and later.
I would not go any thinner than the pro because I used these in the 50's and 60's, and was very comfortable. If you want to be warm and enjoy riding in colder temps, get them and stop suffering.

After trying many other brands & versions I finally spent the extra money on these. definitely worth it for the extra durability. I had some other brands disintegrate after one ride. These are not magic, and will not help in the dead of winter- check 45NRTH for that- but spring & fall these will help a lot.

Peal Izumi Pro Series Thermal toe cover

I was skeptical about Pearl Izumi's Pro Barrier line of products, until I bought a thermal cycling jacket, thermal headband, and thermal cycling and running tights. The only things that still felt cold during a 30 degree ride were my face and toes. These thermal toe covers are made of the same Pro Barrier material which almost completely blocks the wind. My toes were not freezing even when it was only 25 degrees outside.

I used these on Shimano M87 mountain bike cycling shoes, which uses the SPD cleats. I ride on the road with these shoes because some of the more advanced riders at work recommended I go with SPD cleats due to their versatility. Anyhow, the Pearl Izumi toe covers fit perfectly. I bought the L/XL size to fit my US 12 Shimano shoes. It can be a tight fit, and the Kevlar-wrapped lower portion of the toe cover will still contact the ground at the Velcro joint and at the front elastic. I recommend not scraping your feet on the ground and to be aware of how you set your feet down in order to maximize the life of these covers.

Overall: 5/5 stars, they plain work even down to 25 degrees. The L/XL was a tight fit for my US12 Shimano SPD shoes but works perfectly.
