Editorial Reviews

Since bursting out of the Seattle scene in 1991 with their multi-platinum selling debut Ten , Pearl Jam have not just remained one of that city s truly great acts, they have also become - over the intervening two decades - one of the very finest rock bands in the world today. Famously labelled grunge sell outs by Kurt Cobain, Pearl Jam went onto become, by 1992, the biggest selling music artists in the USA. This success did not, however, sit easily with the group. After sophomore album Vs went on to become the fastest moving American record of all time, Eddie Vedder and Co. set about reconstructing their sound while launching a campaign against what they perceived to be the more unjust aspects of the music industry. And even now, after 20 years in the game, Pearl Jam refuse to rest on their laurels, constantly exploring new musical directions while remaining as fiercely loyal to their fans as ever. Pearl Jam Under Review documents this extraordinary band s rise to glory and explores quite how they have confounded fans and critics alike, maintaining their status among rock s elite while refusing to compromise their artistic and ethical values. Includes archive interviews with the band themselves from across their career, contributions from their closes allies and from the finest rock writers and commentators, rare and classic performance footage, previously unseen photographs, tour antics, location shoots and many other features, which all at once make for the finest documentary in existence on the most iconic rock act of the past quarter century. Extras include; audio interviews with Eddie Vedder, contributor biographies and beyond DVD section.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific! November 3, 2010
Format:DVD
The bonehaed who has given this dvd one star because 'Pearl Jam is about playing live - duh' wouldn't recognise an intelligent documentary if it puked all over his Limp Bizkit t-shirt. So let's begin again;

This film reveals the detailed story of Pearl Jam, looking at all the albums from Ten to Backspacer. The whole history of the band, from Green River and Mother Love Bone, through to their curreent activity is covered in a professional and well produced manner . There's some great live footage on here,interspersed with band interviews, archive footage, contributions form those most involved with PJ through the years and some good analysis of the records and their impact on the music world from their conception onwards - also includes much comment and footage about the Seattle scene from which they emerged.

Made me dig out Vitalogy again. What a great album. This film reminds you of how great Pearl Jam were, and still are. If you're a fan of the band and have a litle more of the grey matter than our hapless friend above, go get it, you'll love this doc!

3.0 out of 5 stars mildly interesting January 17, 2011
Format:DVD
The 5-star reviews encouraged me to buy the video spontaneously from a record store when I checked them from my phone. I would say the DVD was worth watching once but did not offer much more than one could pick up from reading articles and watching the band over the years. I learned a bit more about their battle with Ticketmaster and its long-term effects on the band's career. The comments by music critics filled out the picture of Eddie's/PJ's early struggles with fame. Overall the video did flesh out the band's profile a bit, but lacking any unique interviews with band members or any exclusive footage, it consisted largely of idiosyncratic musings by a handful of unnamed critics interspersed with stock footage. There was little to no attention to any album after Yield, critical remarks became very vague and generalized towards the end, and I did not agree much with the positive remarks about the band's evolution over time. It is worth watching if you are a true fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for a new fan! May 19, 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
After reading some of the reviews, I was honestly thinking that there wouldn't be much of interest in this DVD. However, I was pleasantly surprised, as I came away from it knowing quite a bit about the history of the band. I enjoyed hearing the comments of critics and others, and there were some nice interviews and concert clips with the band.

I would highly recommend it for someone who is just discovering Pearl Jam, as I am. It will leave you wanting more, and if you order some of their concert DVDs, it will satisfy that hunger.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than Expected December 10, 2010
Format:DVD
This DVD gives an excellent insight into the development of the band and examines their first three albums in great detail. It gets a little bit rushed towards the end, but it is the early life of the band I think most of us are interested in anyway.
