The PRO Aero jacket is an extremely thin, stretchy, wind-RESISTENT jacket. Good for weather above 45F degree with appropriate layering.

Purpose: I wanted a a packable jacket to block the wind, remain breathable, and look good (I wasn't concerned with the water protection since I will not ride my tri bike in the rain). I found myself overheating in 50-60F degree weather with my thermal jersey but too chilly with a just a short sleeve jersey and thin long sleeve jersey combo. I contemplated arm warmers, but found that the weather really wasn't warming up enough to justify shedding them and exposing bare arms. Therefore, I searched for a jacket that cut the wind, trapped the warmth, and still remained breathable for the entire ride... I found the PRO Aero.

Fit: I am 5'11", 160lb athletic build man and the medium size fits me like a glove. I have never had a sizing issue with Pearl Izumi apparel... if I am a medium in one thing, I am a medium in everything else Pearl makes. With that being said, there is still ample room to layer with this jacket. The sleeves are plenty long enough, the tail is a great length, and the front rides you just at the waist. Note that there is NO rubber/sticky band on the inside bottom of the jacket to prevent it from riding up on you though.

Function: I cannot stress enough that this is a lightweight jacket that must be used in a layering system as the final piece. It is NOT designed to MAKE you warm, but rather to KEEP you warm. Pearl Izumi's Softshell technology is incredible. The material is super stretchy and feels great to the touch. Many reviewers note that this jacket is not a superior water resistant piece, and unfortunately I believe them.

Update. Went for a ride and got caught in a rain storm with this jacket. Water barrier lasted about 2 minutes before I could feel the clothes on the inside start to get wet. I was soaked by 10 minutes
Good if you want just a wind breaker and might get a dribble of rain but not a rain jacket. I was expecting more and sorely disappointed I paid $125 for just a wind breaker!

Old review from me
very snug fitting and lite weight, breathes better than other supposed breathable jackets. Wind chill does penetrate this more than other jackets but that is because it is so snug and breathable. If cold air with wind I have found the PI barrier vest over the top is the best answer

I bought this in LA over the summer, because I knew there'd be some morning that would be too cool to go forth in my summer kit. I bought the white version, so I wore it at night even when it was probably too warm to need it just so I'd be more easily seen. It acquitted itself well in both roles. It packs easily into a jersey pocket, and even when it's a little bit warm, it didn't get sweaty, so I guess that means it was pretty decent at venting moisture.

It's also become an essential piece of my fall kit in Chicago. I wear it chilly mornings over whatever else I'm wearing and it lets me ride in 10 degrees colder weather. I've gone out in it at 40 degrees over a long sleeve jersey, and stuffed it when I got moving and the temperature picked up. A little warmer than that and it goes over a short sleeve jersey and warmers.

I wouldn't ride it in anything more serious than a light drizzle. Well, ok, I would, but I wouldn't expect it to keep me dry.

It's a super versatile piece of kit that works well in a modular system.

And being part of the Pearl's PRO line, it's cut for skinny cyclists.

Sizes seem to run large- so order accordingly, I had to order a size smaller.
According to Pearl Izumi, "The Aero Jacket is a highly technical wind jacket with full stretch to elimate noisy wind flapping. It's as packable as our Barrier Lite Jacket with unsurpassed water resistance and breathability."
Well, the jacket is not in any way water resistant- even in light rain, within a few minutes I was soaked all the way through. Pearl Izumi claims it's a water barrier, but that's a joke.
Buy this if you need a wind jacket and a soft shell that is comfortable and allows good range of motion. If you're looking for a rain jacket, even for light rain, I would look elsewhere.

I've worn this in some cool to cold weather and light rain. So far its been excellent. The cut is fitted, and near perfect for the lean cyclist physique, helped by the slightly stretchy material. The jacket also breathes quite well - push really hard in anything over 12oC and there's some moisture buildup, but in cooler conditions its fantastic. I've used it in light rain, which it handled well, but I expect heavy/constant rain would eventually get in as the seams are not sealed. I have a jacket costing over 3 times as much (on which I suspect the Pearl Izumi one has been closely modelled), and there's very little separating them, bar some seam sealing on the more expensive one. For the money, its definitely 5 stars.

I ride in a road cycling club and bought the Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Aero jacket for protection on some upcoming ultra rides, one of which passes over three mountains. Today I tried it on a five hour ride, most of which was in rain. When it was not raining, the roads were full of water so there was a constant spray. I wore four layers: a technical t-shirt, my club jersey (long sleeves), the P.R.O., and a wind vest (because I need to use my club colors on these rides). Temperature was around 13C (around 55F) and I felt warm, dry and comfortable most of the ride. After a while this jacket will not stop the water from coming through, but that should not be expected. It is however by far the best outer shell jacket I have worn in years. The lack of pockets was not a big deal - it was easy to reach my jersey pockets since the jacket stretches - and it keeps the weight down. The fabric is really flexible. It also did not feel stuffy or clammy which is typical of the transparent rain jacket I usually wear in this kind of weather.

My advise is to always wear an inner layer which will help keep that wet feeling away for a long time, and maybe even a wool shirt over that, then your jersey (for pockets), then this jacket. That will keep you nice and warm for a long time.
